Because....its always smartest to STAND ON TOP of the pile of wood as you pour the gasoline onto it.  What could possibly go wrong???

spanz Considering your other comment in this thread? Yes, that was incredibly dangerous.

Imagine if one of the guys with the torches waiting on the sides had squatted down and his torch had ignited the fuel vapors that were running off the pile. I watched the ignition of the bonfire at 1/4 speed and you can see tendrils of vapor that lit up 20 to 40 feet off the sides of the pile.

The head pyro didn't even make sure everyone was clear before torching it.  If he wanted to experience "Burning Man" he almost succeeded.

It's the vapors that are the problem, right? When all that liquid fuel is poured over the bonfire materials, you're creating a massive pool of explosive vapors that you can't see until you've lit a match, and then it's too late. Half-guessing, half-stating-the-obvious here, I think. I've never witnessed this firstpaw; only seen a few videos.

Addendum: Did you see how far that door at the front blew out from the pile? 100 feet maybe.

squrlz4ever 25 feet at best. 'Tis a good fire but you should have been around here 30+ years ago on the 5th of November (Guy Fawkes night). Some guys would collect car tires starting the 6th of November and literally have hundreds in a pile to light on fire. Personally I'd only have a dozen or so. One year around 40 years ago we waded across to an island and burned the entire thing. It burned for three days. What kind of employee sells a bunch of 10 year olds 5 gallons of gas???

oobaka Only 25 feet? Huh. I guess distances look greater when your 10" high in a sitting position.... Well, you little pyro, you! Where are you from? The U.K., I take it?

squrlz4ever Yes indeed.  especially if it is cold out.  the gas vapors travel outwards from the wood pile--hugging the ground, and when lit you end up with a fireball that extends MUCH FURTHER out than one expects it to.  Ask me how i know this....
