Pure athleticism at its finest!

Going to go ahead and throw my two cents in to those who say this is an American (or 'Western') spectacle. The show is actually a spin-off from a Japanese show called "Sasuke" that has been around since 1997. And even then, Sasuke was hardly the first of its kind. For evidence I give you a clip of well-known ANW contestant Kacy Catanzaro actually competing in Sasuke a year or two ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SjO1P7lPSpQ as well as the wikipedia articles for both ANW and Sasuke respectively: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Ninja_Warrior and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sasuke_(TV_series).

That out of the way, it certainly is a great show that showcases not just amazing physical talent and truly cringe-inducing (at times) announcers, but (and my favorite part) is the camaraderie of the contestants. Even though they all are competing, I have never seen conflict between any contestants. It's an excellent example of good sportsmanship and has been for years. I wish that all of our athletes, and indeed even all of our people, showed the same level of respect to each other.

This is not new game show concept...nor is it even remotely ninja, but it's definitely American.

I do admit it is fine athleticism, though.

warning: don't answer the question to this topic if the answer is no.  holyGod has apparently decided that they only want an echo chamber of yes and will remove comments that they don't like (whole tree deleted where holygod couldn't stand their ground under the guise "nothing special was said")

monkwarrior No echo chamber. Don't like the show. I don't care. This just wasn't the place to have a religious debate and I shouldn't have broached the topic. It's probably easy for you to shit on people who have pride in their accomplishments since you've probably never done anything in your life worth being proud of.

holygod If YOU were the one who brought up religion, then you should have deleted YOUR comments.  My comment was simply pointing out how i saw the show as western media trash, driven by ego, pride and the love for money.  I get you like it, and i get you don't understand how people might not like what you like.  But i don't expect you to understand that since your juvenile pettiness is apparently your way of life, not to mention a discredit to you that you seem oblivious to, it's nothing to be proud of.

monkwarrior I did. I deleted my comment about religion. I deleted ONE comment. The comments that had replied to that comment also deleted. Your original comment is still in the thread and if you want to expound on why it is western media delusion be my guest.

I've seen a few of these online; They're interesting - transiently - but I gotta cut the volume off - those talking heads annoy the crap out of me.

I have watched Ninja Warriors since it's beginnings.  Some of the most non-violent intense athletics out there.  Haven't seen much of "American", but what I have it keeps to the tradition.

I had never heard of American Ninja Warriors when I walked in on my partner watching it. I told him he'd hit rock bottom. Didn't take long for me to be planted next to him as we watched episode after episode. Everything about the show is awesome - the fans, the contestants, the announcers, everything.

Watch it all the time. Some guys make it look incredibly easy. They make the "normal" people look like fat slobs. Every now and then they get the best of the best to compete against each other. Sometimes it's the best from different countries.
It seems the best types of competitor have a background in mountain climbing, gymnasts and parkour.

The commentators have some pretty cheesy one-liners.

Unfortunately it's predictable as the first contestants shown never make it to the end and the last ones shown are usually the fastest.

oobaka I like the new team format and side by side formats as well. Watching two run a course next to each other is way more exciting.

The announcers are kinda terrible. I've met them. Matt is actually way funnier in person. He does stand up. It's hard when you think about it though. All the athletes basically run the same way. There's 100+ athletes. What do you say? How do you do color commentary or play by play for that?

It's a huge advantage to get to see other athletes run the course before you go. Because of that they run them in reverse finishing order from the previous round. So the fastest in the qualifier round goes last in the next round. The slowest in qualifier goes first in the next round. That's why the best athletes are at the end. They sometimes cut it differently to try to mix it up, but when you see it live all the best go at the end.

Nah, it looks like more lame reality tv media delusion, and ego stroking.

Oooh interesting, a whole tree of comments deleted.  good time for this:

monkwarrior Just FYI I deleted my comments too. This post did not need to turn into a religious debate and I think most people on here are sick of that shit happening all the time. This is a non partisan, non polarizing post.

Nobody is tearing out your tongue your big baby. Everybody on here is well aware of you stupidity and insanity. You literally said nothing you haven't said before on here. I fear what you might say the way that I fear what someone with tourettes and dementia might say.

holygod It was you who was turning it in that direction, i was simply pointing out how the western media delusions of ego, pride, and greed, is very tiresome for many people.  I understand you like it, but make no mistake that you were turning it to religious, and i was pointing that out to you.  And as usual you were losing.

Again you did not have to comment if you didn't like what someone has to say.  However, if you do indeed have power to delete my comments, you simply have proven that you fear what i might say, and that your hate has no bounds that you will abuse your power to satisfy it.  But that is no surprise to me, as i know that mindset very well, it's unwise as you were and are.

I suppose now you will silence this if you have that power, since your mindset is a juvenile and petty one, and now your pride is insulted again, and you want to lash out at someone who exposes the truth of what you are 'hooked' on?

monkwarrior Absolutely. I fully admit I was the first one to get religious. I intended it to be a one off comment, not hijack the entire thread. Again, nothing you said was special and earth shattering we all know your schtick. You repeat it ad nauseam. The conversation had no place on this post.

holygod So you purpously hijack a comment that you hate, and then delete the thread when you lost? How would you like it if i said "nothing you said was special" and just went around deleting your comments at will?  fancylad this is the mods you want?

monkwarrior FFS drama queen, I'm not a mod and I don't have the power to delete your comment. I simply deleted my own comment that brought up religion and had no place on this thread. All the back and forth under it deleted too. Feel free to think you "won", you always do anyways.

Thanks for posting fancylad!

I was actually in Vegas to watch this year's finals. So cool in person.

There isn't really any money in the sport for these guys yet. They all have day jobs. They do it for the fun / challenge / love of the sport like the football players of the 20s and 30s / basketball players of the 40s and 50s.

The show airs Mondays on NBC if anyone wants to follow it.

holygod can't remember if it was Netflix or Hulu my wife was watching this on the other day, but all the re-runs are there as well.  I always forget to ask my friend if his brother (audition video below) ever made it on the show and have not found the time to sit there and watch all the episodes myself.  Maybe one of you that watches the show regularly will recognize him though!

waldo863 It isn't on netflix. A similar show called Beastmaster is. I'm pretty sure Hulu has it because it's an NBC show.

holygod Yeah, I don't keep track of what show is on what network or which streaming service has what network anymore.  I haven't had cable in years and I don't pay for Netflix or Hulu, I just use friends accounts.  So I don't know what's what anymore and my wife decides what we watch most of the time anyway because most of the time I'd rather be on my computer playing a game instead of watching TV anyway.

I'm constantly amazed by these guys/girls. They never look really bulky or muscle-y -- they're just lean and tone. This should be an Olympic sport.

fancylad Yeah, bulky/muscular is totally different.  Those bodu builder types actually don't have the agility needed for stuff like this.

Here for your veiwing pleasure is my best friends brother's tryout video from a couple years ago:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCz_DzhtY0Y

Due to some bad mexican food and a monster mixing poorly in my stomach, I threw up on this guy a couple weekends ago on a roller coaster at fiesta texas too.  Fun times!

Also fun fact, the guy is more of a musician than anything else.  Has a band and gigs, is a waiter and then does works out and does this kinda stuff for fun.  Probably about like your average contestant.
