This Healthy Teenager Died After Drinking A Liter Of Mt. Dew, A Large Latte, And An Energy Drink

Submitted by: fancylad 6 months ago in News & Politics

Davis Allen Cripe, 16, died after drinking a liter of Mountain Dew, a large latte (sorry, I mean a venti latte), and an unnamed energy drink, but how much do you wanna bet it was Monster?

Davis Cripe died when his heart fell out of rhythm at Spring Hill High School in Chapin, South Carolina -- he was healthy with no signs of disease (according to the doctor post-mortem. He died from caffeine which led to cardiac arrest. "We lost Davis from a totally legal substance," Watts said told WLTX

Could have been one (or more) of those little '5 Hour' drinks eh?

That doesn't seem to be a lot of caffeine, eh? Lots of people have a much higher daily intake. I strongly suspect some sort of allergy or existing heart issue that wasn't evident in an autopsy.

5cats In weekly D&D sessions I would often drink 2 to 3 2 Liter bottles of Jolt over a 4 to 5 hour period. And 6-7 cans of Coke and during exam times I would down several 357 mg tablets of caffeine a night with no ill effects at all. Although I do not remember sleeping the whole time I was at collage

Physically he was fine. To drink all that makes me wonder about his sanity.

Yay, you can name hundreds of things that are or could be considered a drug if taken in bulk but completely or at least relatively harmless when used in a normal way. This kid was trying to stay awake or get high or just being a stupid kid, the parents might have been more vigil but who knows what has been going on between them. The kid  probably  knew better even in a basic way, he played the game and lost. Even water will kill you if you drink to much, if your that stupid.

One of the more interesting books I've read in the past year was The Triumph of Seeds by Thor Hanson. In it, Hanson discusses alkaloids, nitrogen-based organic substances produced by plants to protect their seeds and leaves from insect predators. Toxic to insects, alkaloids have a similarly powerful effect on humans, with effects ranging from being deadly toxic to invigorating to numbing. Notable alkaloids include caffeine (from the coffee plant), cocaine (from the coca plant), nicotine (from tobacco leaves), strychnine (from the strychnos tree), and morphine (from the poppy). Basically, when you drink coffee, you're getting a buzz from a natural insecticide.

squrlz4ever Peanuts also have an Alkaloid in the skins just inside the shell, deadly to many insects, bitter if eaten by humans , Hallucinogenic if smoked. " Care for a few meal worms and black oil sunflower seeds?" ~Offers a tentacled hand full of bird seed and worms~

thezigrat Really? I didn't know that about the peanut skins. Very interesting. Thanks for sharing. And don't mind if I do... ~daintily accepts proffered bird seed and a few mealworms~

Caffeine is an addictive drug.
Heroin is an addictive drug.
Grapefruit is essentially a drug.

And the rules are basically random for each substance.

There is a never ending cornucopia of substances that can kill you if misused, combined or abused. Frankly, I am amazed things like this don't happen more often.

No, you lost Davis because he was a dumbass, and you didn't teach your kid not to do stupid stuff - and you failed to properly monitor your kid.
I mean, let's be real here.

rumham Live long enough and someone you love will die from doing something stupid.

Had an aunt and uncle that grew marijuana and sent all three kids to school to sell it.  Was a surprise to no one (except my aunt and uncle) that two of them ended up dying from drug overdose.

Loved them all, but have no problem calling them dumbasses.

I'm sure, in this case, some idiots will focus on the Mountain Dew, Latte and/or energy drink.  Truth is he did something stupid.

Now some stupid people will cry 'he didn't deserve to die', and they will be right, he didn't. But in reality you don't always get what you deserve.  Sometimes stupid is fatal.

I had a cousin, a drunkard - who, at twennysumpin years of age took a shortcut home from a bar, through a cemetery. Yup, he fell in a freshly dug and empty grave and apparently passed out - and froze his dumbass to death.
Now one can argue the cemetery should have had better perimeter fencing, or that the empty grave should have been blocked off. Or one can call a spade a spade, and say the drunken fool created the conditions of his own death.
Personal responsibility; Seems to be a largely forgotten virtue.

megrendel Yup, ignorance is no excuse.  Just because you didn't know something was illegal, doesn't stop you from going to jail.  Just because you don't know something is deadly, won't stop it from killing you.  Did he deserve to die, maybe not, but he did, sorry 'bout it.

That said, we really do shove caffeine and energy drinks in peoples faces all the time without ever really telling anyone how dangerous it can be.  Yes, it's your responsibility to educate yourself about what you do to your body, but this stuff is literally thrown in our faces every time you turn around.  Hopefully, this is an important lesson to all and some people learn from this and don't make the same mistake.  Was he kinda an idiot, yeah.  Does that make it less of a tragedy, no.

captkangaroo All 16 year olds do stupid stuff it is pretty much a requirement of being a teenager and how much monitoring do you recommend, anything short of 24/7 wouldn't prevent this.

It's true kids do stupid shit. As a teen, car surfing was a thing when/where I lived - did a bit of that myself. A few years earlier some friends and I decided to learn how to repel down the sides of a rock quarry with home made gear - based on what we could find in books at the library.
Never got very busted up car surfing - though I had some friends that were seriously injured, and not one of us learning to repel came away without some broken bones and some pretty good scares.
So I get it; Kids do dumb things. Part of a parents job is to be involved with your kids, to be aware of who they are, what they're doing, in order to minimize that.

taxidriver A lot of teens drink a lot more caffeine than this on a daily basis, I have to think some other factor is involved, eh?

Caffeine is actually more fatal than arsenic.

Toxicity to mice:
Arsenic: 145 mg/kg
Caffeine: 127 mg/kg

holygod Wikipedia says: LD50 Arsenic = 763 mg / kg, LD50 Caffeine = 150-200 mg / kg.  But, these are for mass ingestion.  Drinking small doses of arsenic over a long period will give chronic poisoning, but drinking small doses of caffeine over a long period won't do anything... i guess.  Arsenic can react and give oxygenated compounds which are a lot more toxic.

jeanrenaud True, some animals are more or less resistant to poisons than others.
Warfarin (for example) is less effective on cats than it is on dogs. About the same dose to kill a 5kg cat and a 25kg dog (iirc)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warfarin

The accumulation part is the critical difference, I agree. Caffeine gets wash from the system fairly quickly, while Arsenic and others linger for a week or longer.
Arsenic used to be a spice, like pepper or thyme :p
