So What If The British Empire Never Just Never Happened?

Submitted by: fancylad 2 weeks ago in Lifestyle

The sun never set on the British Empire. But what if it never rose? What if the British didn’t conquer the land they did, particularly in North America. What would we see from this? Here is one scenario.

Without the British Empire, democracy never develops.  The Age of Kings doesn't end.

Without a religious challenge to Catholicism, women never get to vote and never would achieve political and legal equality with men.

Technologically, we simply don't advance as quickly and I would be willing to bet that by the year 2000, horses are still the major motive power on land, but steam is coming soon.

We never get to space.

While we never reach the population we have now, due to the limitations on food production, we never get close to destroying the human race, either.

Lots of small wars, no big ones of the Twentieth Century.

Russia remains under the Tsars.

Japan and China remain feudal.

First Point - the age of kings ends because of WWI... even without the USA that will happen.

Second point... there WAS a religious challenge to Catholicism when Henry VIII separated and formed the Anglican church. Martin Luther in Germany also challenged the church.

Second point, we would still develop... AG Bell was  a Scot and the first cars are in England and Germany.

Third Point , the father of space travel is Vernor von Braun ... a German.

Fourth, the population we have now is mostly due to China and India

Fifth is just stupid.... WWI & II still happen. Germany is still there even if the British empire is not.

6ths point - WWI caused the fall of the Tcars. It would happen anyway.

7th, China would still become communist with Russian influence. Japan? No one knows as it was the US that forced them out of seclusion.

I dunno, Gerry; Without the U.S. I don't see Germany and Japan failing - Italy was always a joke, and Germany certainly would have turned on it anyway. I think the dynasties likely would have shifted to Asia and Africa.
And that's if WW1 and WW2 happened without the influences and pressures caused by a British Empire.

captkangaroo Yes, the world map would be different. I just challenged claims that "we would not develop" "we would not got to space" etc.  Nazis would go to space if given the opportunity.

Gerry1of1 we're talking about no British empire in the late 1600's and after.  Without a rich England, no one stops the French.  The Anglican church withers away and Luther has no support.  While the Dutch continue to lead in  Protestant thinking, the Dutch and the Nordic countries would be no match for the Sun Kings and the Tsars. Napoleon might become a general in the late 1700's, but the French revolution does not happen without the English acting as a counter point to the French Kings.  A French republic does not appear.  The age of kings backed by a dominant Papacy does not collapse in the early 1800's.

The age of enlightenment doesn't happen or is significantly delayed, if the Papacy is allowed to run rampant.

North America could well end up resembling the Africa/South America/South East Asia of today, although I doubt it.  The French would become the dominant naval power and would force entry into the Pacific, although much later than the British did.

punko The UK doesn't disappear, it just doesn't colonize. So why would the Anglican church fade? Or Luther in Germany?

The french revolution happens because the french monarchy is corrupt. England didn't cause it so it will still happen.

The "Age of Enlightenment" wasn't all that enlightened.

Also this video ignores Spain and Russian. Russia colonized Alaska, Washington and Oregon, half the western coast. Spain had California and Mexico.

This is just one mans musing... not real theory at all.
