Education Secretary Betsy DeVos Was Booed Speaking At Historically Black University Today

Submitted by: fancylad 1 month ago in News & Politics

What kind of reaction did anyone think Betsy DeVos was going to get? The unqualified Education Secretary begged her audience today at Bethune-Cookman University to listen to her viewpoint, but it's not like these students don't know who she is -- she's made her views on education very clear. And then that guy comes in and says something like, 'If this behavior continues, your diploma's will be mailed to you.' As if it matters how you get your diploma.

Students boo'd, some stood up and turned their back, and some yelled anti-Trump chants -- she gave her full speech, you can see it below, but it was anything but inspiring. A commencement speaker is supposed to inspire graduating students to make a change in the world -- to do something with their lives, and to make go out and do great things (see John Waters' commencement speech -- it was life-affirming and applicable to everyone)

And here's video from the audience's perspective...

This is really sad to know that unqualified education secretary begged her audience and listen to her point of view. She gave her full speech to anyone and it is quiet inspiring. To get dissertation writing help from the all time favourite writers.

I don't know what to make of this.  Part of me thinks this is wrong and in poor taste, but a bigger part of me thinks that Trump and his cabinet members are reaping everything they've sown.  His entire campaign was full of hate speech and false information.  Nevertheless, enough gerrymandered morons voted for him and he got elected.  It should be abundantly clear now that he and his crew are most definitely NOT what the majority of this country wants in our leadership.  Sadly we non-morons are saddled with an unfit President and we are mostly powerless to change anything for at least two years.  But if we keep making our voices heard - even in not very polite ways such as this - maybe somebody will wake the fuck up and do something.  Maybe someone will convince Trump to stop appointing out of touch billionaires to be secretary of education despite the fact that she has absolutely NO idea what it is like in public education, much less to be a college graduate who has to struggle out from under crippling debt that piece of paper created on the off chance it MAY help them get an OK job in today's world.

This is not to say that things would have been any different had Hillary been elected.  I imagine things would be just as bad - or even worse since apparently Republicans have no qualms making abject fools of themselves in public, and put party over country.  The only difference is that I'd be on the opposite side of this argument.

I'm afraid America may be broken beyond repair.  And I am deeply saddened by this.

I wonder how much she "donated" to the college so they would let her speak?

Hell she bought a cabinet position, might as well buy a commencement speech too..

Im guessing Bethune-Cookman didn't charge nearly as much as say Duke or Ohio State.

Now im trying to guess where she could have gone and had a reasonable chance of NOT being booed?

Perhaps some Texas schools?

It is very clear that the will of the people, that votes, don't matter. It is clear that with each administration change the government is increasingly out of touch with the people - much less reality.
When working within the system yields nothing - time after time after time - eventually the rabble is aroused. Rightfully so.
This is a pattern that has been repeated ad nauseum throughout history.
Our present federal government is particularly bad, reminiscent of the robber barons of the 1800's.

Seems short sighted of the faculty to invite her to speak at commencement, a forum where those who are interested in dialogue would have been more appropriate. That seemed rude to her and the graduating class/families. Also you're diplomas are mailed to you anyway...anyone who's ever gotten even a high school diploma which is presumably everyone in that room would know that...
