When responding units gained access to Cornell's hotel room, he was found on his bathroom floor, unresponsive, and declared dead. Director Michael Woody of the Detroit Police Department said that his department is unable to talk about what was found in Cornell’s hotel room at the time of his death. "We are at the beginning stages of the investigation and we can’t say anything about the scene," he said.
UPDATE 2: TMZ is reporting that Detroit police confirmed with the site that Cornell was found by a family friend "with a band around his neck," and that the department suspect that his death was a suicide.
Chris Cornell's rep says Cornell's death is 'sudden and unexpected', but gives no further details. Cornell was in Detroit at the time of his death. The only other thing his rep said was that the Cornell family would be "working closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause."
Soundgarden had just played at the Fox Theater in Detroit last night, and it had been scheduled to perform in Columbus, Ohio, on Friday at the Rock on the Range festival.
Cornell seemed engaged with the tour and was active on Twitter in the hours before his death. A post on his Twitter account on Wednesday announced that the group had arrived in Detroit.
