Check Out This Sweet Friday Night Dungeons & Dragons Session From 1981, Film On Super 8

This is what it was like to be a real nerd, back in the '80s, before the word 'nerd' got co-opted by hipsters. Everyone's a nerd now, but you aren't a real nerd until you get your ass kicked on a daily basis for the stuff you like.

From Ethan Gilsdorf, the guy who shot this video: It's 1981, and yes, this is poorly shot. But this is an actual (silent) movie from a real Dungeons & Dragons session back in 1981, shot by Ethan Gilsdorf, author of Fantasy Freaks and Gaming Geeks, on Super 8 (back when I was about 15). This takes place on a Friday night in Lee, New Hampshire. Look for the classic Mountain Dew can at 1:53.

I was born in 1975. I'm a nerd. I cried like a bitch when Gygax passed away. I've never understood the hate people have for nerd things going mainstream, though. I spent the first 30 years of my life hiding my dorky hobbies. I've spent the last decade talking to complete strangers about everything from superheroes to video games.

It's fantastic. So much better than before.

No one owns being a nerd. It's a shared experience now for millions of people.

I first played D&D out of the original box in the late 70's.  Technically, these guys were playing AD&D.

I started roleplaying in '93, when I was 13 years old.  This is like a glimpse into the world of our ancestors.  Very cool post.
