Star Wars as a whole is far nerdier than Star Trek.
The SW books are... lame. ST had a terrific series of short stories and other novels.

Essentially? ST is nerdy yes, but SW is for nerds who are too nerdy for the ST crowd and got rejected by them :-)

stifler They were unbelievably dumb... but not as dumb as the scripts involving peace-loving Wookies... those were mind-alteringly dumb!
The lesser of two stupids :-p

5cats Ill be honest (and unless I missed it) I am honestly surprised that Jar Jar Binks didn't get properly raped in this "" skit ""!

stifler I chuckled at the brief appearance of 'Q' which is equally as stupid as 'The Force' eh? Which is why it's funny.
They both have lots of flaws, tons of them! But overall I like ST way more than SW. After that first movie it was all downhill... while lots of ST franchises have been excellent!

Star Trek by far. It was always a deliberate attempt to explore philosophical and moral issues through sci-fi. The Next Generation was the pinnacle of this attitude. The pilot was a study in intergalactic ethics for crying out loud.

Star wars was a great retelling of old classic action / adventure plots set in a sci-fi universe. I found the Star Wars trilogy (There are only 3 star wars movies.) more entertaining as a media experience, but Star Trek is a more cerebral endeavor.

Star Trek is certainly nerdier but both franchises have a good share of geek followers.

I like both but for me Star Trek would have benefited from more imaginative alien races, the Klingons and Kazons spring to mind as being incredibly tedious.

mrteatime Romulans, Vulcans, Andorians, there were lots of races added later as well.

Did Star Wars really show any other races for more than a few minutes? Aside from the Wookie and those horrible Ewoks...
I recall a few being creatures tossed in here and there, but mostly? Humans everywhere. Were there any alien stormtroopers? Serious question, I recall they were ALL humans...

5cats I do agree that there were some interesting alien races on Star Trek, but for me the majority were quite bland and just humans with head or nose ridges, but I suppose that comes with the territory of a long running series with twenty odd episodes per season.

mrteatime of course most of the ST races were basically humans with slight appearance difference because they have to put them on EVERY DAY they are filming (in most cases over 7ish years) and a lot of the time it's on 5+ people that are in ever season also, plus each race is pretty different in most aspects outside of appearances
ST > SW

boredusernames01 I was going to point that out, that ST:OST had a ridiculously LOW budget! They cut every corner possible, it showed up in almost every episode too :-x
Star Wars had a reasonable budget for the first show, then a crap-ton of cash for all the rest. Still produced only moderately interesting things, and while the effects were exceptional? That's no replacement for a good plot and a viable storyline eh?

So yes, TV is way harder to make than any movie because it's so fast! You can't have a dozen extras sitting in make-up for 3 hours each every day for two weeks... extras! Not even the main cast! Time is precious when the deadline is inflexible...

Gerry1of1 those are fighting words gerry. star wars is fun and fantastical, star trek is boring. try taking a small child to see any of the star trek movies before the rebooted alternate timeline crap. they would be running all over the theatre like wild animals (true story, generations, nov 1997, i was 3 years old). nerds are cool, dorks are all about science crap. and star trek is all about science crap. star wars is more fantasy than sci/fi. i would like to take a moment now to say i love and appreciate star trek.

robthelurker That's right, small children would not enjoy Star Trek.... because Star Trek is geared for adults and requires some thought.... Star Wars on the other hand is best suited to it's audience on Saturday Mornings... the under 10 {mentally} crowd.

Gerry1of1 "Star Trek is geared for adults and requires some thought" translation: boring. "Star Wars on the other hand is best suited to it's audience on Saturday Mornings" you do know that saturday mornings is when they play the best cartoons right?
