Screaming Meteor Of Doom! Juuust Missed The Earth The Other Day

Submitted by: 5cats 4 months ago in Science

A chunk of rock roughly the size of Gibraltar came for a close fly-by. Known for a few years, it got about as close as the Moon, 1 million miles away. It would not have been an 'extinction event' but would have made quite an impact wherever it might have hit. Officially called JO25, but nicknamed The Rock, the asteroid came closest to the Earth yesterday at 1.24pm.

So be sure to vote for the SMoD in 2020 and hope the next time is more successful!

I like the bit about the ARM spacecraft using an asteroid deflection technique called a gravity tractor.

It was by President Trump's divine intellect that he willed it to miss the earth and cause the Sun to shine each day for he is the creator of all things. Before him there was only darkness and void. He threw money at the void and Said I Want to buy light. And there was light.

thezigrat Upon seeing the light Trump did buy land and upon it did erect many hotels and golf courses with unpaid labor. On their creation he deemed them good.

"it got about as close as the Moon, 1 million miles away".
Moon-Earth distance is 238,900 mi, so roughly 4.5 times less.

m3dm3d Oh, I never checked it. They said 1 million miles in one part and I (incorrectly) thought they said 'about as far as the Moon' in another part. Nope, my bad! It even has 4.6 times as far in one of the graphics. :-/

Nobbinz It coulda been a contenda, but nooo...

On general astronomical terms, I'd say it's in the E-M separation type of distances. You know, within an order of magnitude.
