Lorde's Follow-Up Single, "Green Light" Is Currently Blowing Up YouTube

We all loved "Royals," admit it, but how does this tune compare to her breakthrough single?

I think she froze up artistically. The way people fawned over her after "Royals," it was like she was the Mozart of pop music and the Savior rolled into one. She probably felt a crushing weight of expectation for her follow-up, with the result being this cramped, disappointing piece. Sort of a "second novel" syndrome. Maybe she'll recover on her third time out.

I liked royals, that is the sad clown version of it. This is so middle of the road it's got cat's eyes on it.

This is how you dance to this new one:

Stand around awkwardly, wait for beat, wait for beat. Beat's finally here. Dance, dance.

piperfawn Yeah, it's surprising formulaic and wall-of-sound-ey. A weird direction given the uniqueness of the song that propelled her into fame.

Not a fan, but I thought "Royals" was unique for its time. There was something different and new there.

This song sounds like she hired whoever the hot producer is this month and the guy made her sound like everyone else. She was stripped of what made her unique. That said, it'll probably go platinum by the end of the day.

fancylad Ya, that was my impression, too.  It's okay but it's not great - just sounds like everyone else.  I love her vocals and I like her look in this video but the song is run-of-the-mill

I've been waiting for her to put out new music.  Now I'm waiting for her to put out some good music.  This song screams "I've hung out with Taylor Swift too long"

fancylad I get that musicians change and grow and experiment, and I wonder if I didn't like this just because it was different.  But I didn't like this and couldn't even finish it.

faustsshadow In in the same boat you're in. With "Royals," I thought we might have another Sinead O'Connor on our hands, but it sounds like she played it safe with this one.
