Two guys way smarter at math that any of us are solve the eternal question: What are math's origins?

Interesting interview, but, for me, he went off the rails when he started talking about the mathematics of mathematics. I do think he has a point to be made that our current system of numerical/logical science (mathematics) is historically grounded in applied mathematics. 

I don't think I agree with his premise that changing our mathematical structure to something other reality based systems will produce real world breakthroughs. Isn't pure abstraction by definition inapplicable?

Math is very broad.

Certain types of math, like cryptography, was invented.

Other types of math, like formulas that explain physics phenomenons, were discovered.
