[UPDATE] The Senate Panel Just Rejected Trump's Wiretap Claim

Submitted by: thenedman 2 months ago in News & Politics

It's barely lunchtime and it's already been one hell of a bad day for Trump. Just a little over an hour ago, BBC reported that Republican Senator Richard Burr, the Senate Intelligence Committee chairman, announced that the Senate Panel had dismissed Donald Trump's claim his phones were tapped.

So for Trump, will any ramifications  come from alternative fact?

UPDATE: Here's Sean Spicer going apeshit on the press corp. during the daily White House press briefing. This guy's gonna die from an ulcer within the year. -- fancylad

Good grief. Just watched that clip of Spicer. Brittle and testy are two words that come to mind.

I've just returned from a week abroad and spent some of that time with an Italian and a German. Their unvarnished opinion? America has gone off the rails with an unqualified, petulant, mentally-ill president. (Trumpeters, please don't snap at me for this. I'm just reporting what I'm encountering abroad. I have yet to meet an educated foreign national who thinks Trump is in any way good for America or Americans.)

He's not going to make it another 6 mo I think if his own party isn't going to support his buffoonish  behavior. And they shouldn't.

johncourage Howso?  Trump stated he was "wiretapped" by President Obama.  There's not one single Government agency that can back up that claim. They are legally required to do as the President requests.  This isn't up for debate, there's no "fake news" here other than the President lying.  Which doesn't seem to phase his followers.  Yet Obama's "lies" did.  So very odd.

normalfreak2 Here are the alternative facts.

johncourage Ok but that's completely different than "Obama ordered a wiretap".    Being wiretapped isn't illegal if you have a warrant or go through the proper channels.  There's legal precedent to being under investigation.  At this point it's STILL just rumors.  The Government cannot find ANY requests to wiretap Trump regardless.  Until the Federal Government agencies, ANY of them really say they were investigating Trump or wiretapping I'm going with it's false.

Listen why do you trust Breitbart when the POTUS has access to the highest level of intelligence and information available?  Breitbart doesn't know more than the intelligence agencies.

normalfreak2 Because "wiretap" is an expression that does not necessarily mean a literal wiretap. When someone asks you "why are you busting my balls?", they aren't accusing you of bag tagging them.

If you think the POTUS has access to the highest level of intelligence and information available, then why don't you believe that he was wiretapped?

Personally, I think this is a non-story. Just chatter to fill the day. A way to avoid talking about NSA data being open to all agencies without court warrants and other f'ed up stuff.

johncourage This comment of yours has so much illogic in it that I'm shaking my head, frankly. You're saying that "wiretap" doesn't mean "wiretap" and that the president's extraordinary claim must be right because he has access to the highest level of intelligence... yet he somehow can't offer a speck of evidence to support that claim.

Here are two of Rump's wiretap tweets. Note the lack of quotation marks in these. Looks to me like he quite specifically meant that his phones had been wiretapped:

"I'd bet a good lawyer could make a great case out of the fact that President Obama was tapping my phones in October, just prior to Election!"

Also:

"How low has President Obama gone to tapp my phones during the very sacred election process. This is Nixon/Watergate. Bad (or sick) guy!"

squrlz4ever I never said the POTUS has access to the highest level of information and that what he said must be right. The wiretap claims may turn out false. The investigation is ongoing. Saying it is over is fake news.

johncourage Well, I'm a little confused at this point. Your question ("If you think the POTUS has access to the highest level of intelligence and information available, then why don't you believe that he was wiretapped?") seems to be based on the idea that since the POTUS has the best info, his assertion must be correct. If that's not what you meant, what did you mean?

Also, pace your comment, no one in this thread--not the original poster nor any of the commenters--is saying the investigation is over. That said, it seems obvious to me that if Trump actually had any evidence to offer, he would have offered it already.

squrlz4ever Someone else said something about the POTUS having access to info. That's why my sentence began with "If you think".

The post is about the senate panel supposedly dismissing the claims.

johncourage "Because "wiretap" is an expression that does not necessarily mean a literal wiretap."

That spin only works for two of Trumps tweets. Your false narrative falls apart when you include this one:

"How low has President Obama gone to tapp my phones during the very sacred election process. This is Nixon/Watergate. Bad (or sick) guy!"

Or this one:

"I'd bet a good lawyer could make a great case out of the fact that President Obama was tapping my phones in October, just prior to Election!"

trimble Except one has some there there, the other is a bullshit claim that we can find no evidence of.  Listen I'm glad you are happy with a President that can say whatever he wants and you never know if you are being told the truth or facts.  That type of misleading may be okay with you, but you better becareful how you wield that double edge sword.  Ignorance and stupidity can and will be used against you.  All Trump is doing is encouraging people becoming dumber.  FACTS ARE FACTS LIES ARE LIES.  Now that we are mixing and matching that's a powder keg.

trimble For someone that doesn't Trust either side you are extremely vocal about "liberals".  I don't buy your shtick, which probably doesn't bother you but don't hold yourself up as anyone less blind than anyone else.  We all have our prejudices.  The fact you haven't been critical of anything or at least vocal about it is telling of itself.  Quit hiding behind the "i'm independent flag/free thinker".  It's bullshit, and the evidence proves it.  I don't pretend to be straight down the middle. I am a center left thinker, I know what I am.  No blinders necessary.

His WH supporters are screaming that the Senate panel are calling the Lump a Liar and the President is now calling for the investigation of those members, as well as the person  that leaked about the wire taps in the first place as well as criminal persecution of Obama

He should be made to present his evidence and justify his claims, if he can't he should be reprimanded and forced to make a public apology. Politicians have a responsibility to make sure what they say is accurate and backed up with facts, especially when serious allegations are made. Many people suspected the wiretapping claim was a diversionary tactic at the time and it looks as if they might well have been right.

fancylad It sure is a very bad state of affairs where Trump can pull any old claim out of a hat and not suffer any consequences. I agree the resources wasted on this kind of thing is disturbing.
