Bet You Didn't Know George Harrison Single-Handedly Saved "Monty Python"

Submitted by: 5cats 8 months ago in Entertainment

After the smash success of 'The Holy Grail'? Python pitched a religious spoof and.... no one was buying it. So George took it upon himself, with largely his own money, and produced the film: Life Of Brian. While I have issues with that movie, it does have amazing moments and set the course for Python's future en-devours.

Who knew a Beatle could help a Python like that? Sort of... Lion and Mouse eh?

If you want to know about Life of Brian, watch Holy Flying Circus (released 2011).

From wiki: " The film is a "Pythonesque" dramatisation of events following the completion of Monty Python's Life of Brian, culminating in the televised debate about the film broadcast in 1979. "

The real televised debate is also available on you tube.

Far more interesting than some stupid Cracked shit...

Also 5Cats - Lion and mouse? Did you come here for an argument? I'll argue that Python were a Lion in their own right. No it wasn't, yes it was, I win.

stifler Yes, the lion was Python, and George (the quiet Beatle) was the 'mouse' who helped them :-)
No arguments intended!

Holy Flying Circus isn't on YouTube, just bits and pieces of it, and shady "links" which I won't touch.
Here's then talking about Life of Brian: 23 minutes.

Here's a documentary about LoB 53 minutes

5cats Ok! (I read 'a beatle' as 'the beatles' - who were a Lion too)

Holy Flying Circus (IMDb) is available in e-stores for about $10. But if you like Python, you probably already have it!

This is the full interview on "Friday Night, Saturday Morning" (precursor to SNL????).
It is in 4 parts, other links are in this one.

This was news to me! But it makes sense because George was very involved in the background of many British Arts projects and music.

Didn't know various musical groups helped fund The Holy Grail, and I've watched a couple of documentaries on it :-/

I like most Python movies and skits, but some are just plain bad or offensive. You can't please everyone eh?
I even liked most of Jabberwocky... well half of it maybe, lolz!

5cats I always loved the Python crew. Even when they were bad, and especially when they were offensive (I do have a pretty sick sense of humor!).

I knew it but am a fan of both. BTW fancy, there is no "head and shoulders above the rest of the Beatles". The Beatles are the Beatles each as important as the next.

I recall that Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and Genesis helped out financially with The Holy Grail. I do like the Life of Brian though, it really appealed to my thoughts on religion at the time and the "Biggus Diccus" scene nearly made me wet myself.

George was my absolute favorite -- head and shoulders above the rest of the Beatles.
