The man behind rock n roll, the innovator. There will never be anyone like him again.

There was that time he got caught filming women while they peed, though...

Pretty sure that throws a little shade.

It just depends on how we consider the first rock and roll recording. Cool songs.

Whatever the claims of Rocket 88 or Good Rockin' Tonight or Arthur Crudup's That's All Right Mama to be the first rock'n'roll record, Rock Around the Clock was more important because it was the first rock'n'roll record heard by millions of people worldwide.

Can it be confirmed that he ushered in rock and roll? Who else was before him? I'm drawing a blank.

fancylad Yes and no, yes in that he was one of the ones who ushered in rock and roll, no in that he wasn't the only one who did it. Other groups like the Coasters, Little Richard, and Johnnie Johnson were doing the same thing at the same time.

fancylad Chuck was one of those who first pushed it out of the sidebars. Is kinda a full circle moment sadly :\. 90 years though, good for him.

fancylad I just did a smidgen of research, and found that the first artist to place what's considered a rock and roll song onto the pop charts was Bill Haley & His Comets with "Crazy Man Crazy," which climbed to #12 in 1953. But Chuck Berry was nipping at his heels, starting with "Maybelline" in 1955. Berry's influence on the genre was so great that John Lennon once remarked, "If you tried to give rock and roll another name, you might call it 'Chuck Berry'."

thezigrat Sank chew! ~gingerly shakes tentacle~ It's good to be back. Had a wonderful time in Jamaica for a week, part of it hiking up in the clouds of the Blue Mountains. Didn't go near a computer for the entire trip. I love the interwebs, but it's nice to get completely away from it from time-to-time.
