Wrestling Loses Two Greats That Everyone Loved To Hate

Submitted by: 5cats 3 months ago in Sports

We've lost two great old school wrestlers these last few days -- George "The Animal" Steele passed away on February 16, and Ivan "The Russian Bear" Koloff left this mortal coil on February 18.

I grew up watching these guys, they were consummate, professional entertainers. And very bad! Booooo! Booooo! Both were "heels" and always the villains and what memorable villains they were!

Ivan (Oreal James Perras) went on to become a born-again Christian minister, dedicating his life to worthy charities. George ( William James Myers) did some acting after his wrestling career was over. He played Tor Johnson in "Ed Wood" -- a remarkable role.

We loved to hate them! Now they can wrestle with the angels.

i wanted to be sad, but after reading their bios and finding out they went on to live long, full lives, it became more bittersweet.

From pro-wrestling's 'Golden Age'.
It's important to remember how critical the 'bad guys' are to most entertainment. From the visiting team to The Joker, no hero or victory is complete unless someone gets defeated. These men, and many like them, provided a clear villain that was easily identified, yet they weren't push-overs! And they were real characters too :-)

I was going to post something about George "The Animal" Steele, but I didn't see anything about Ivan Koloff...so said.  Old School Wrestling is pure entertainment.

Anyone remember this?
