Um, There's Currently A Russian Spy Ship Lurking 30 Miles Off The Connecticut Coast

Submitted by: fancylad 4 months ago in News & Politics

It's not in American territory, it's in international waters, 30 miles out. Residents say, "Oh this has happened before, but not it a long time." Officials are saying that the ship is "loitering" which is common for spy ships, but only 30 miles off the coast? And in this current climate? Officials are saying don't worry about it though, so... OK?

Apparently this is being called a low-risk incident, but you have to ask yourself, 'What kind of message is Russia trying to send here?'

You may remember that in 1968 an American spy ship (USS Pueblo) was captured by the North Koreans and the ship and crew held for 11 months.  The ship was within 10 miles of shore.  The ship is still held by the North Koreans.

In his first solo unscripted speech The Hump said he wanted to blast that sub out of the water. The sub is in international waters and blasting the sub would be a definite act of war and would most likely start WWIII. This guy is an idiot. He also spent most of the press conference blasting and discrediting the press and avoiding almost all the questions and only wanted to hear questions from "Friendly" Reporters. Is this really the person you want to lead the free world?

This is such old news. I wish IAB would stop trying to be a news site when fancy clearly has a day job and simply cannot keep the content current and get back to less boring stuff.

trimble Everything. Try real hard to understand each word, then put them in order. The short version: Your president is a fool and makes all who voted for him look like a fool.Mostly because he acts like a fool.
Republicans lied about Obama (guns still legal,No shiria law, and he deported more illegals daily than Trump), and all Trump does is lie and get busted for lying. I can explain it, but I can't make you understand it.

That is the Viktor Leonov SSV-175, it's a modified Russian made SSV-231 Vasiliy Nikititch Tatischev reconnaissance ship. It's one of the newest types of Vishnya-class intelligence ship. Only 7 these ships were built from the early to mid 1980s into the beginning of 1990. The ship is part of Russia's Northern Fleet, it went into service 1988 in the black sea and is one of the last made and most advanced of it's type. It's about 3,470 tons, is a little over 94 feet long, has a crew of about 146 people and it was named after Viktor Leonov who was a two time soviet navy war hero. The ships primary purpose is to collect military transmissions and signal data via the two large towers on the mid and stern. The data is then transmitted to a mainland base via two rotating satellite antennas placed in the white dome. Yet the reason it is stationed off the coast of New London Submarine Base is more likely due to it's ability to deploy a series of buoy submarine detection systems, along with it possessing an advanced hydroacoustic positioning system on the bottom of the ship also to detect submarines.

This is just my guess, but it's possibly trying to track shipping traffic, or our new modifications to our Los Angeles-class nuclear-power fast attack submarine, or some kind of recent construction to the base. We've been building Los Angeles-class submarine's because they are cheaper than Sea-Wolf Class attack submarines and that allows us to keep up with China especially with new budget constants. Yet China just unveiled their new Type 095 submarine a few years ago and were claiming it was better than the Virginia-class and comparable to the US Sea-Wolf Class attack nuclear submarine. That would be a significant problem for the US since our Virginia-class submarines are expected to still be in service in 2070. I would think the Russians would like to know what our countermeasures or modifications might be if indeed the reports are true. Besides it's also just good strategy to gain intel on your opposition especially when they are gesturing for a power play.

I don't think Russia is trying to send a message with this. Sending spy boats really isn't any kind of show-of-power. Most countries have them, including us, and we are all do the same thing constantly, spy on each other. The only reason this made news is because Russia is seen as America's nemesis and there has been a lot of media attention focused on Russian spying.

I have to say I don't know what capabilities this ship has, but could it have been sent to pick up spying for those Obama ejected?

Just a bit of info I looked up, in case anyone's curious: The United States and Russia both ascribe to the same definition of territorial waters, which are the waters foreign military vessels are not supposed to enter. The agreed-upon extent is 12 nautical miles (or about 14 statute miles or 22 kilometers) from the land at low tide. The Russian ship is 30 nautical miles out, so it's respecting U.S. territorial waters by 18 nautical miles or about 21 statute miles. Thirty nautical miles gives our subs a lot of maneuvering room heading into and out of Groton, where Electric Boat is located.

From what I was reading in the Hartford Courant, the Russian ship's presence is largely for show. Experts say the Russians don't have the technology to decipher our military transmissions (nor can we decipher theirs, I'll bet). About the only signals it can collect and decode are commercial ones. Then again, I imagine its sonar is capable of identifying the individual subs in our fleet, so there's that to consider.

squrlz4ever  The United States have acoustical buoys stationed all over the worlds oceans they use these to track shipping including submarines  If we have this sort of thing there is no reason to think the Russians would not have the same thing. There are many articles about the spying we and the Russians do. I believe that I read that the Titanic was actually found by one of our spy subs installing recording devices on Russian under sea cables.

the message they're sending is "what goes around comes around".

If the world's #1 terrorist regime doesn't want to have people snooping around and meddling in their affairs, perhaps they shouldn't have been snooping around and meddling in others affairs.

monkwarrior Monk, it would be helpful if you'd address Marsii's comments regarding what been going on in Syria. I take it your position is that the U.S. has committed greater acts of terror than what's taking place there? If you'll make the case, it might get the two of you off of the ad-hominems.

Just trying to help this once. (I'm in a good mood tonight, for some odd reason.)

marsii sorry, but the facts are quite clear in just this short thread, and was obvious to most with your use of language in your first comment. Better luck next time

squrlz4ever Take a look at terrorism and then consider what nation considers itself the 'policeman' of the earth, and how a terrorist regime operating within it could use terrorism to achieve its aims, for its own purposes, even against the people in its own home nation.  Vague? yes.  Forcing you to think for yourself?  yes.

They will never for get his humanitarian efforts and how he has brought peace to the middle east.  Such a great man. And by the way if you want some real exiting prospects in reality I have a bridge for sale in New York, its called the Brooklyn Bridge and I have it at a good price, buy it now and put a nice toll on it and make you're money back in no time.
