This Is What Rio's Olympic Venues Look Like A Mere 6 Months After The 2016 Olympics

Submitted by: fancylad 3 months ago in Sports

When you look at these photos, remember that it cost around $6 billion to get these venues built.

I used to be a fan of the Olympics until I learned that they are a colossal black hole for billions of dollars and that the venues get largely wasted afterward. Look at Greece and Brazil...two countries which could have urgently used that money for socially-beneficial purposes. Instead, you get...this.  Oh and added debt mountains to boot.

I've long since thought that the amount of money and resources wasted on the Olympics is obscene.

Build the venue in Greece. Have it there every two years instead of four. Let a city actually establish an economy around it instead of being devastated by it. Lawd knows the Greeks could use the money.

But just like FIFA, the IOC excels at ripping countries off. It'll never happen.

Yeah, but not matter how much you push Germany's way, they will just waste it and get very little to nothing in return.  Just ask the Eurozone.

Als, truth be told, the Rio Olympic complex was pretty much shit while the Olympics were going on.

profworm They did build it in Greece in 2004. Then it fell apart much in the same way.

profworm Yes, sadly, the graft they rake in is immeasurable, the corruption is right from the top to the foundations. They will never change.
And sometimes the venues do quite well after, and provide a boost to sports in that nation for decades afterwards.
