Because It's Presidents Day Tomorrow, Let's Revisit George Washington's Farewell Address

Submitted by: normalfreak2 4 months ago in News & Politics

The Washington Times has a really well-written article about George Washington's famous Farewell Speech, although it wasn't really a speech. It was a 32-page letter written by him and published for the public.

The crux of his letter is his warning of the political system. When he was the president, there were no parties. When he left after two terms, two political parties became defined, and he cautioned us of the "the alternate domination" of one party over another, thus allowing one party to hold temporary power over the government that would use it to obtain revenge on the other.

He called it.

The 2 party system that follows the adversarial model seems to be increasingly dangerous. You end up with the false dilemma of Clinton vs Trump. There are so many other options to suit our political beliefs and nearly nobody advocates for all the policies of their representatives.

And so I ask you Mr. Washington, why do I have to choose between a turd sandwich and a giant douche?
