The 2017 Nordic World Ski Championships opened yesterday at Lahti, Finland, and already provided some Olympics-worthy moments, when Venezuelan Adrian Solano appeared to be on skis for the first time ever.
As he explained to the BBC, since there is no snow in tropical Venezuela, he only trained on wheels before. Of course, he planned to train on snow for a month before the event, stopping by Sweden between his Caracas-Paris flight and this week championships in Finland.
However, things did not go well for him when he reached the EU immigration checkpoint in Paris. Given the chaotic situation in Venezuela, immigration officers were very careful when they saw the young man with only 28€ in his pockets. The "Cool Runnings"-like answer "I am a professional skier from Venezuela who wants to see snow for the first time," did not convince authorities, resulting in Adrian to be placed in a deportation center for a month.
Is immigration to blame?
