Set Your Alarm: "Squirrel Appreciation Day" Is Only Three Days Away

Submitted by: squrlz4ever 10 months ago in

The 17th annual Squirrel Appreciation Day is just four days away! First celebrated in 2001, the holiday was created by Christy Hargrove, a wildlife rehabilitator in Asheville, North Carolina. Observe the day by putting out some peanuts (unsalted and in-the-shell, please) for your local fluffy crew.

To get everyone in the mood, here's one of my favorite squirrel-related clips, from the movie Rat Race...

squrlz4ever Look, here's how it goes. I grew up in the woods of Central Florida when there were still woods. I now live in the Blue Ridge mountains. I feed your furry relatives with my BIRD feeders, not SQUIRLZ feeders. They are so yummy fried and BBQ'd but I make a stew out of them that is to die for. This isn't personal. I think they are cute and entertaining. Until it's time to eat.
Nothin' personal you understand!

Man, I love that clip...but....ferrets are better.

(Butters ducks and covers for daring to say it, but, it's an inbred response. I might be an Aussie, but my parents and older siblings are Yorkshire born and bred...and putting a squirrel down your pants is just silly. That's why God invented ferrets. Putting a ferret down your trousers for a laugh is part of our culture....)

buttersrules Ferrets are OK by me. In truth, I get along with most creatures out there, with the following exceptions:

1. Hawks.
2. Owls.
3. Foxes.
4. People who own .22 rifles and make use of the term "good eatin'."
5. That lady and her yapping dachshund who about once a week take endless walks around the base of my oak tree.
6. Gophers.
7. Space gophers.

I taught mine to bring me walnuts from down the street for a few raw peanuts. I would then put the walnuts in his feeder later.

thezigrat I wish I could get my bank to do that. "Oh, you've brought us two ten-dollar bills? Here's a twenty. Come back in half an hour and we'll give you the two tens back!"

My squirrels, Spaz, Tweek, Chuck and Red get unsalted peanuts (in the shell) a few times a week.  I'm one of the good guys.

agurney Nice backyard you have there! And there are no "wrong" colored squirrels--black, white, brown, red, gray--it's all good. (Hoping you said "yummy" at the throught of all the nuts people will be leaving out for squirrels and not something else.)
