Is anyone here old enough to remember the days of the ultra-charismatic and inclusive Ronald Reagan? I have to admit, I vehemently disliked his widely debunked trickle-down theory of economics, and his anti-environmentalism stance, but he truly earned the nickname "The Great Communicator" and was a great negotiator for peace. I also disagreed with many of Bush Sr.'s policies, but he was a sympathetic and influential Ambassador to China and pioneered construction of what is now the International Space Station.
Watch the video above from 1980 when Bush and Reagan debated how they would treat law-breaking illegal immigrants, and while they don't want anyone to break the law, you can get a sense of their genuine empathy for illegal immigrants who hunger for just a little part of the American Dream.
Illegal immigration was a huge issue during the debates at that time since it had nearly doubled in 5 years, and many American citizens were rightfully concerned about the drain to American resources. The number of illegal immigrants have tripled since then, and have remained largely stagnant since 2006 for a variety of reasons.
