What Can We Learn From The Reagan Vs. Bush Sr. Immigration Debate In 1980?

Submitted by: bliznik 8 months ago in News & Politics

Is anyone here old enough to remember the days of the ultra-charismatic and inclusive Ronald Reagan? I have to admit, I vehemently disliked his widely debunked trickle-down theory of economics, and his anti-environmentalism stance, but he truly earned the nickname "The Great Communicator" and was a great negotiator for peace. I also disagreed with many of Bush Sr.'s policies, but he was a sympathetic and influential Ambassador to China and pioneered construction of what is now the International Space Station.

Watch the video above from 1980 when Bush and Reagan debated how they would treat law-breaking illegal immigrants, and while they don't want anyone to break the law, you can get a sense of their genuine empathy for illegal immigrants who hunger for just a little part of the American Dream.

Illegal immigration was a huge issue during the debates at that time since it had nearly doubled in 5 years, and many American citizens were rightfully concerned about the drain to American resources. The number of illegal immigrants have tripled since then, and have remained largely stagnant since 2006 for a variety of reasons.

Nowadays everybody wanna talk like they got something to say
But nothing comes out when they move their lips
Just a bunch of gibberish
And motherfuckers act like they forgot about Dre

Americans have empathy its just we are tired of being taken advantage of and then used as the fall guy for enforcing the law. And apparently neither of the these men did anything to solve the underlining problem.

casaledana What are you and toetagmodel2 talking about? Fancy didn't say America was missing empathy, he said Trump was. I'd say he's pretty spot on with that statement. Narcissist usually lack this characteristic.

markust123    I went to the School for kids that don't read to good so after reading the heading several times I don't see Trumps name there once or any reference to him at all only the so called  empathy that these two Presidents have for illegals. To which they never did anything to help stop the flow of illegals which went up under both there presidencies. So there you go toetagmodeltoo

So is empathy missing in America because of our politicians or do our politicians not display empathy because it is missing in Americans?

toetagmodel2 Neither. People are people. What's happened today is simply what happens when you let the worst have the most power. From a country whose inception celebrated the massacre of millions, too, gotta remember, we're a damn site better than we ever were.
