This Canadian Woman Was Arrested In Turkey For Insulting The Country's President On Facebook

Submitted by: 5cats 1 week ago News & Politics

The woman you see in the photo is Ece Heper, 50, Heper was arrested on December 30, 2016 while in Turkey (Kars to be exact) because of some Facebook posts she wrote that were critical of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

What she wrote wasn't general, she was very specific. In one Facebook post from this past December 28, Heper accused Erdogan of jailing journalists who suggest there's evidence that Turkey's supporting the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, ISIS.

Unfortunately for Heper, Turkey's penal code says that anyone who insults its president can face up to four years in prison. Canadian officials say they are offering consular assistance, but are keeping quiet on this matter for the most part.

Remember, Turkey is a 'moderate Muslim nation' and supposed to be secular. That is changing.

This sort of thing goes hand in hand with Erdogan's power-grabbing and the Islamification of their nation. Bad news all around. With the spineless child-Prince running Canada, her home country likely won't do much to help this unfortunate woman, sad eh?

5Cats - I don't understand your issue here. That seems quite moderate to me. At least when you consider that the alternative could have been a public whipping followed by beheading. Quite moderate. Erdogan is so forward thinking, isn't he?

This sort of thing in Turkey is not new. Travel at your own risk in thirdworld shitholes.

captkangaroo true that!
this is a little bit different in that she's from Turkey originally, and that Turkey has been trying to NOT be a 3rd World Shit-hole for a decade or more now... until Erdogan got in power of course! now he's determined to make it a full-fledged Islamic nation. And thus a 3rd World Shit-hole by design, not by accident. :-x

Back in the 60's and 70's, mustaches were very political in Turkey - I know, right? - People died over insulting the mustache of another, kind of like honor killings.

Yep, this president Erdogan is a piece of work. Secularism in Turkey was always a fantastic ideal, and generally speaking, it was functional.  However, the Syrian crisis,  ISIS, local Russian aggression made it possible for a populous president to be elected.  His reforms have driven his country toward fundamentalism.  It is sad.

I was with you until the last paragraph, 5Cats, not much point of making a Trudeau reference, it doesn't add much.  She intentionally broke a law in a country she is visiting.  Consular support is important, but it doesn't grant you immunity from your own stupidity. We can criticize another government for having laws that we don't, but only a prideful fool goes into another country and intentionally breaks their laws and expects to get off without any consequences.

I would hope that the country might release her to Canadian custody and punt her out of Turkey, but that remains to be seen.

punko It is a very sad development in Turkey. Ataturk was one of the greatest military and political leaders of the 20th Century. He did so many amazing things to bring Turkey into the modern world... and now Islamists are doing their best to bring back the 14th Century :x

Yes, she took stupid risks. Yes, it's 'against the law' there and she should have know that! given the topic she was discussing eh? But these 'laws' are there for political oppression, not the protection of anyone except the oppressors themselves. The international community MUST speak up, and loudly, against them.

Hopefully Donald will do a better job than Barack has done...

I also hope your solution is found, but that takes strong diplomacy, something Prince Justin lacks entirely... that's why I mentioned him. FacnyLad put the IAB Link in, it does illustrate just how out of touch he is.

BTW: His 'family vacation' is on the private island of a billionaire LOBBYIST who gets tens of millions in Government contracts every year... hundreds of millions. His PMO tried to HIDE this, and LIED about it, just like they did last year!! The same thing, but even worse this time, and he simply doesn't give a rat's ass about morality. Or anything except himself. Oh, and taxing the shit out the commoners, he cares a LOT about doing that...

Ugh. Very sorry to hear this. There aren't many more forbidding phrases than Turkish prison. I hope she gets out soon.
