A 100-Million-Year-Old Insect Was Just Discovered And It Looks A Lot Like An Ant

Submitted by: normalfreak2 2 months ago Science

George Poinar, a highly-respected Ohio State University researcher, discovered this ancient insect preserved in amber which represents a new species, genus, and family insects. It's so unusual that a new order had to be created. It looks like a weird cross between an H.R. Giger alien and an angry ant, no? I, for one, welcome our new insect overlords.

This insect is remarkable. Haven't read any studies on it yet, but just looking at it, the usual insect body structure (head, thorax, abdomen) is different: the thorax seems to have a "pre-thorax," to which the first set of legs attaches. It's almost like we're seeing evolution trying out a different body design before settling on what has become the three-part standard.

And those eyes! Astonishingly round and prominent. The only thing similar today that comes to mind are the eyes on some praying mantises. One possibile explanation for them may be that ants at this point may have been living their lives entirely above ground and needed to be on lookout for predators from above. Perhaps the move underground was in response to such predation. Once tunneling beneath the soil, large eyes would be unnecessary and an impediment to movement. Really fascinating.

Great post. I love this man. George Poinar is my new role model: 80 years old, still fascinated by the world around him, and still doing significant scientific work. Just beautiful.
