Yet Another List Of Science Fiction You Should Have Read By Now

planet-apes-bookcover Click here for a massive list in the form of a huge photo. Old and new, classic and experimental? Science Fiction Novels have shaped our society, and here's a list of really good ones. Broken down by age, genre, and relevance. What do you like on this list? 1-5 scale of suggestions! Looking through it, there's FAR less bullshit here, and LOTS of stunning titles! The ONLY one I'd pick out as 'WTF' is Margaret Atwood, handmaids Tale. Despite being from my homeland? She sucks. A few are repeated, but mostly? This is one of the best 'all time' lists I have come across. :-)

I personally like the "Man/ Kzin Wars" saga books (Ring World spinoff, they are so good they have been featured in Cameos in all most all the Star Trek (Tos/OTL) movies and in the Tas episode "The Slaver Weapon" where Spock, Sulu and Uhura come across a Thrint soft weapon... and K'zinti.

Speaking of manga: Here's three very different ones I really like! Not 'normal' sci-fi but... Tousaku Shoujo Shoukougun Loosely translates as: 'Fortune-telling girls business center' (maybe) NSFW it has a lot of really weird stuff going on! Eyeball licking... nudity, but not full-out p0rn. No gore, but violence. Lesbians and, um, did I mention the eyeball licking?? 18+ NSFL! Mystery, supernatural, all sorts of weirdness! Not for kids! Gojikanme no Sensou Home Sweet Home. Here's some hard-core sci-fi! Just loaded with angst and plot! Really, you'll see after just a few chapters how riveting this ongoing manga can be. Kotonoba Drive By a world-famous writer/artist, here's a G-rated, easy to look at and mellow story of a girl who occasionally visits other dimensions... but just for 5 minutes. >>> Remember: Read RIGHT to LEFT, top to bottom, eh?

It's a good list, eh? Not perfect, but I love the way they have various categories & gradients. Love the covers too! And I can't say I've come close to reading them all, not by half. Like casaledana says: I used to devour Sci-Fi novels and stories as a youth, but reading just doesn't get done any longer...unless it's a manga! :->

Having once been a prolific scifi/fantasy reader I hardly recognized any of these only the ones written before say 1970 or earlier, I guess I'll have to step up my game.

You should... The best stories were written between 1890 and 1960.

One that should be there is "The King In Yellow" a horror/science fiction book of short stories that inspired HP Lovecraft.

You need to separate the author from their work.  Atwood, despite your dislike of her and her political views, deserves to be there.  I can't stand Card as a person, but there is absolutely no doubt that Ender's Game deserves to be on this list.

I have other novelists that I would add and novels I would substitute from those authors listed, but there are no novels or authors listed that shouldn't be there.  This certainly isn't the best list of the top science fiction novels, but if you wanted to start your own library everything on this list is a valid beginning.
