The Russian Ambassador To Turkey Was Just Assassinated

Submitted by: fancylad 11 months ago in News & Politics

Russia’s ambassador to Turkey, Andrei Karlov, was assassinated in Ankara, Turkey on today by a Turkish off-duty cop who cried out that it was “revenge” for Russian bombing that killed civilians in Aleppo, witnesses said.

The Telegraph is reporting that the shooter has been identified as Mevlut Mert Altintas, an off-duty 22-year-old riot squad cop, based in Ankara for the past two years.

As Altintas started to fire, he shouted "We will not forget Aleppo, we will not forget Syria,” he said in Turkish. "No one can be safe as long as our brothers there are not. Get out of my way.”

Then he declared in Arabic, "Allahü Akbar!” (God is great!), Mohamad. We are the ones who pledged Bai'a to Mohammed on the terms of jihad as long as we live." He was then shot dead by police in a shoot-out that lasted 15 minutes. Three other people were wounded in the attack.

I have to agree with Squrlz4Ever Kind of like Bush at 9-11 not a lot he could do short of jumping into the phone booth and coming out as Super POTUS there's not one thing he could do at  that moment.  And in this case its just some faceless plutocrat  in the Gov. of Russia. It is sad the hole situation in Libya that has claimed one more life. Thanks Obama.

A couple observations I feel compelled to make after watching the video from Fancy's link. (1) What a despicable act, to shoot an unarmed man in the back nine times. It's sickening. (2) I sometimes wonder if the Muslim extremists who shout "Allahu akbar!" after committing such atrocities are aware they aren't helping their cause. I mean if you had, for example, Mormon terrorists screaming "Praise God and his prophet Joseph Smith!" every time they slaughtered innocents, the mood of the populace would turn on Mormons overnight. What am I missing here? Someone help me out.

And in response... Obama went golfing.
I wish I were joking...

Somehow this will be blamed on Trump... or Bush! ANYONE but Obama! Because it isn't his fault, he drew a red line! And when it was crossed? He... drew another one, and then another, and THEN! He BEGGED for help from the Russians, who are now firmly in control of Syria and fully supporting their boy, Assad.
Thanks Obama!
At least NOW there's a President who can say the words "Islamic Terrorism"...

Serious question here, no snark: What would you rather have had him do? Surely not cancel his vacation and fly back to Washington? I'm not sure there's much he could do, other than offer his condolences to the Russians in a pro forma kind of way, which I'm sure he instructed his staff to do in the course of his security briefing on the matter. I suppose you're thinking is that he should have rearranged his schedule and stayed off the golf course for appearances' sake? I guess?

It is far too late to redeem Obama's legacy, no matter how desperately he is trying to. He will forever be known as the Obamacare bringer and golfing President.
Bush was criticized for golfing after having sent troops to the Middle East... so he gave it up for the remainder of his time. Not even (afaik) while on vacation, and he was an avid golfer. THAT is something!
He could at least have made a gesture, no matter how token, to the victims of Islamic Terrorists. Innocent civilians harmed by HIS feckless lack of leadership and actively arming Iran and others who want only to destroy us. But he cannot even say the words...

The world is getting scarier of late. Which is saying a lot because it was already pretty scary.

Its always  been scary, welcome to the world of the internet where we can see things happen as they happen.  We've chosen to ignore the rest of the world.  Wait until technology hits Africa and we see some real messed up shit or from inside Iran.

Here's video from Twitter of the scene. No blood or gore, but it does show the ambassador getting hit.
