And there were photos! How many times have I told you guys -- your stupid phone cameras are going to bust you every time.

An excerpt from the Register-Guard:

A senior law professor wore blackface for Halloween, prompting condemnation from the University of Oregon president and the launch of an online petition seeking the professor’s resignation.

“The use of blackface, even in jest at a Halloween party, is patently offensive and reinforces historically racist stereotypes,” UO President Michael Schill wrote in an email he sent to students. “It was a stupid act and is in no way defensible.”

The unidentified professor has been placed on administrative leave pending completion of a civil rights investigation, according to UO Law Dean Michael Moffitt.

I honestly dont see the big deal... If someone wanted to dress up as Michael Jordan or Malcolm X its somehow better to illustrate them as white folk?

Personally, I agree...but the costume should be obvious - If you need to explain it, you've failed.

Well, academia is a pretty rarified atmosphere. They take this kind of stuff extra-seriously. Personally, I think the professor, who's already apologized, should receive some kind of censure and then life should return to normal. By no means should this act of stupidity be a career-ending event. Regarding the partial defenses of blackface I'm seeing here: Guys, under no circumstances is putting shoe polish on your face and donning an afro wig acceptable. While it might seem okay for a caucasian to dress as, say, Michael Jordan in this manner, it isn't. If you don't understand why, you need to learn a bit about the role of blackface and minstrel shows in American history. Those shows insulted blacks in the worst possible way for hundreds of years and were still being performed into the 1960s. It's very recent, and very ugly, history.

I think it's stupid. But we live in a country where stupid is not a crime.

yes, hundreds could be... offended. are you suggesting that it is wrong for people to be offended by blackface? stupidity may not be a crime, but in the workplace, being stupid will get you fired. so much for intelligent conversation.

Did you even read the article? QUOTE from article............" A fellow UO professor, who declined to be identified, said the offending professor meant her costume to depict “Black Man in a White Coat: A Doctor’s Reflections on Race and Medicine,” a recent autobiography by Dr. Damon Tweedy that recounts the racism he encountered in medical school. Witnesses, who included students and faculty, said she was showing partygoers Tweedy’s book." END QUOTE It would seem her intent was not to offend but to help illustrate a point. Bad judgement of her part? Probably. But now there's a petition top have her fired. An online provocateur was quoted as saying "Halloween should be banned until white people grow up." Oh yes...that's a lovely thought. Nothing racial or hurtful there...just toss all us white folk into one barrel ...yes sir. So I just hope there's not a camera around when all of you do something stupid and have your whole career and possible future put in jeopardy.
