Sound Detection And The Loudest Sound That Can Kill You

Submitted by: lalapancakes 11 months ago in Tech Science

If you’ve ever wondered how we humans know when there have been nuclear tests in places we can’t see, that knowledge comes from sensitive instrumentation spread across the world known as infrasound detectors. There are a couple of ways to hear sound like typical detection through decibels and also through frequency. While we definitely can hear decibels, our ability to hear frequency is limited to certain levels. For levels that are too high or low, there’s the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization's network of frequency finders...

An excerpt from FiveThirtyEight.com:

Low frequency sounds are so impactful on life, it’s important to track them. The loudest sounds could kill a human. Krakatoa would shred a human within a close range, while it was heard and felt around the world multiple times.

Even with that protection, extremely loud infrasounds can still have an impact on our bodies. Humans exposed to infrasounds above 110 decibels experience changes in their blood pressure and respiratory rates. They get dizzy and have trouble maintaining their balance. In 1965, an Air Force experiment found that humans exposed to infrasound in the range of 151-153 decibels for 90 seconds began to feel their chests moving without their control. At a high enough decibel, the atmospheric pressure changes of infrasound can inflate and deflate lungs, effectively serving as a means of artificial respiration.

Actually, there IS a brown note. It sounds amazingly like a one-night-stand saying 'We're pregnant."

Opening sentence: Should be "infrasound detectors," not "infrared sound detectors."

Was about to point that out...but in a much more sarcastic way.

It's 2016, nuclear weapons should have been illegal by 2000

That would work about as well as making drugs illegal.
