The Seattle Seahawks' Richard Sherman Explains Why No One Watches The NFL Anymore

NFC Championship - San Francisco 49ers v Seattle Seahawks

Seattle Seahawks' Richard Sherman on why the NFL's ratings are declining in an NFL-organized press conference...

"Because the league isn't fun anymore. Every other league, you see the players have a good time. It's a game. This isn't politics. This isn't justice. This is entertainment. And they're no longer allowing the players to entertain. They're no longer allowing the players to show any kind of personality, any kind of uniqueness, any individuality. Because they want to control the product. They want to control the messaging, etc., etc.

They say we're trying to influence kids, and that's their biggest thing. That's their biggest ploy is you don't want to be a bad influence to kids. You don't want to be a bad role model. And I can agree with that. But in the same breath, you can't say Budweiser is the official sponsor of the NFL, and we're trying to influence kids. So there's a ton of hypocrisy, but it doesn't matter because we don't control it."

Sherman may be divisive, but he's a smart guy. He's got a point, and I think it goes farther than just the players. Coverage of football is boring as hell, not just the game itself. I can't remember the name of a single on field reporter that they cut to to ask players dull questions, and I bet the players don't either. There's no relationship between the players and the coverage. No back and forth. Just, "How did it feel to do the thing with the other thing?" "It was good. I tried to do it and then did." "Back to you guys!"

Football became boring. Too much time spent not playing football during the games.

It had been so long since I watched a football game that I didn't even know they were being penalized for showing off after a touchdown. Glad I'm a soccer(football) fan.

Because the NFL doesn't want to see players act a fool because they caught a fucking ball. You're a pro, act like you've been there before.

It's a game. If you do a good feat you should be able to celebrate. This 'can't hurt the other teams feelings' concept is bullshit. A few more years it'll be the NFFL..National Flag Fooball League where no one is allowed to keep score and everyone get's a participation trophy because, after all, "aren't we all really champions?"

What the fuck are you talking about? Hurting other teams feelings? Hell even I think a lot of these "protect Brady" rules are a bit much but I have no problem with excessive celebration rules. For a while things were getting out of control....TO and his Sharpie's come to mind.

How the fuck did T.O. and his sharpie hurt the game in any way? It was fun and silly and we still remember him doing it. What's the down side here?

I love Richard Sherman. I'll be at the game tomorrow with my best friend since preschool.
