It was 8:09pm, Sunday night, and my friend posted some upsetting news on his Facebook wall. North Dakota police were enacting a full on assault at that very moment against Standing Rock protesters. The tactics they were using against protesters involved spraying them in sub freezing temperatures with water cannons, launching mace grenades at them, and shooting them with rubber bullets. The scene looked like utter chaos in the many of the videos being shot live.
The North Dakota police including Morton County Sheriff looked like they were aiming blasts of water directly at the open skin and faces of the protesters. Some protesters had to call for medics after taking rubber bullet rounds to their heads and faces. The medics, themselves talked about skin sloughing off as water hit flesh in the freezing temperatures. All in total, according to the next day tally from the Intercept, 300 peaceful protesters went to medic care for hypothermia, frost bite, ect... with 26 having more serious injuries. One woman is even going to have to have her leg amputated.
In a disgraceful show of slow response, the televised media had to by heckled through social media and print media to even bother covering what happened to the protesters on Monday, the following day. Often getting their facts way wrong claiming protesters were throwing rocks and setting the bridge on fire when in fact nothing was being thrown and the protesters had wood based fires to stay warm in 23f degree weather. The initiation of the protest was apparently started as protestors made an attempt to clear the way of the direct highway route to Bismark.
Along with the mockery of slow televison news response, the cops involved in the incident claimed violence and riots on the part of the protesters during a Monday press conference. They also deny using a water canon. But past events have told us the security and police at the protest have lodged fake complaints to justify over-aggresion before, and if you look at the videos for those supposed riots it's clear there were none.
