UCT Students Say That Modern Science Is "Racist" And Too "Eurocentric"

Submitted by: Cajun247 8 months ago in Science

Black magic? Witchcraft? If this is true, these students have an incredibly valid point.

An excerpt from Heat Street:

... because science was handed down to Africans as truths invented by white scientists, it is Eurocentric and oppressive. So get rid of that crap, and completely start over somehow by, I guess, finding a new equation for gravity or something. It’s like she believes all science was invented by white people, an idea which is ironically very colonialist.

“I have a question for all the science people,” [the woman in the video above asks]. “There is a place in KZN called Umhlab’uyalingana. They believe that through the magic — you call it black magic, they call it witchcraft — you are able to send lightning to strike someone. Can you explain that scientifically because it’s something that happens?”

The so-called scientists in the room were unable to answer the question.

Cape Town, wasn't this the city that arrested two halves of an empty coconut for suspicious behavior during an election just recently?

BTW, do these clowns actually think someone will HIRE them after graduation if they only study junk science?

excellent idea. start with Physics F = M (A)^1.2 Chemistry PV = nR(T)^2 Electricity V = I*R*T because the electrons get antsy when they are hot Thermodynamics:  Thie IS such a thing as an even break   It would revolutionize the world, as we know it

Sumerian clay tablets show pythagoreon principles 1K years before Pythagorus was born...Egyptian mathematics and engineering...babylonian astronomy....North African/ middle eastern mathematics and architectural design, optics, etc....Where does the word algebra come from? Al-Jabr. European? Not much. The amount of science that originated in Europe is 1/2 of 4/5ths of fuck all. Most science orginated in china, the near east, or north africa.

I can't get the link to let me view the page so I was not able to read the article. But O MY GOD any accredited collage thinking like this, the out right refusal to see the facts of know science should not happen, to disprove her lightning story is so simple make it happen on command under controlled conditions etc scientific method I'd be willing to bet at least one scientist of color has used it, do they have a way to redo the norm ? The ignorance is monumental. And I would like to know what there rules were, I guess they expected the reaction they got and made some kind of rule "don't laugh at us" and then expecting an apology for finding there nonsense is silly and unbelievable , is just not letting any apposing argument question them which is exactly what there calling out.

If she surrenders all conveniences derived from western civilization and goes home to live in a mud hut with the family goat to worship tree gods, I would have more respect for her point of view.

"My slim grasp on reality and belief in bullshit mumbo-jumbo has just as much validity as your fact-tested and proven facts." Can someone teach her the advantages of removing herself from the gene pool?

Maybe the chicken heart is like a signal to an orbiting space ship and is actually an alien symbol for 'see that guy?...fuck that guy' :O ...science does not rule out possibilities!

What makes their complaints even more ridiculous is that Africans before European colonialism did actually have a respectable grasp on science and scientific thought. After all tribes grew, harvested, and consumed crops and actually had an effective means of keeping a lid on malaria outbreaks. Nowadays, far from being a poverty stricken continent as they're depicted in movies they actually have a lot cities that would qualify as modern urban centers. So really these "students" are just insulting their own heritage.

they have no fucking clue about it.... which is so horribly sad for, well for a massive continent that is seen as second rate even by africans in diaspora

Sad part is people like this often get positions of power by stating abserd statements that only speak tpo the irrational. I wouldn't be surprised if one day she runs for president. I would also like her followers to try this "Utopia Idea of no non Afro-centric technology or knolefdge. Even the Anchient Egyptians benefitted GREATLY (Bigly as The Trump would say in his own made up language) from Greek teaching, engeneres and mathmatics.

She's wearing Eurocentric clothes, sitting on Eurocentric furniture, in a Eurocentric building, speaking a Eurocentric language. She's oppressing the hell out of herself.

Throwing out the text books has been tried before. Thats the main reason the Library at Alexandria was burned, and as we all know that ended well for the next almost two thousand years.

Yeah! So-called scientists with all their studying and facts! Thanks to white, European scientists, hundreds of deaths occur every day from objects falling on people! We never had to worry about any of that before gravity was invented! Thanks a lot, Isaac Newton! Dick!

Rampant liberalism, running amok! This is the result of decades of liberal-left indoctrination in America's schools. Small wonder they are among the worst in the world (despite hauling in a huge amount of public money). >>> In 'the old days' this sort of thing would be presented to show students how DUMB people can be and to teach them how to logically refute such nonsense. But these people actually believe their own bullshit and expect the audience to accept what they say verbatim. Deplorable! And there's a hell of a lot more, every day, that just isn't as blatant.

#1 - UCT is the University of Cape Town. This is in South Africa, not America. #2 - You really need to stop this bullshit of finding ways to politicize everything for the purpose of dunning all liberals. It makes you appear ridiculous.

WTF ?  rampant liberalism ?  This is the result of fundamentalist thinking (let's not teach science properly, instead lets treat all kinds of creationism as equivalent to science).  This is the western world discovering that science/mathematics is important to learn, and that parent's not having any education leads to this stuff.  "Anti-vaxxers" are another symptom of allowing pseudo-science mumbo jumbo like intelligent design and creationsm to even be mentioned in schools.

Right. Because witchcraft was NEVER practiced in Europe...oh, wait, that's not right. This is just so astonishingly stupid. I hope she's good with kids; maybe she can be a baby sitter.

Witchcraft, or other forms of 'spiritual magic' is universal. I think every culture throughout history has had it. Even communism (USSR and Chinxa for example) replaced 'magic' and religion with the worship of the Great Leader who would essentially do magical things if you obeyed enough. :-/
