The last time the Cubs were in the World Series was 1945, two years before Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in baseball. As such, until Tuesday night, the Cubs never had a black player play for them in the World Series.
Dexter Fowler changed that, leading off the ballgame at Progressive Field against the Indians.
Like trimble said (above) it isn't the skin colour that matters, it's that it USED TO matter in baseball: no Negros were allowed to play in 1945, the last time the Cubs made it to the World series, eh? People just accepted this reality: owners, players, coaches, fans :-/ It sure took a long time for some human decency to win over the bigotry, and even longer in Basketball and Football!! Not the CFL (Canadian Football League) though, we always had a few black players around :-) Same for hockey, although to be honest there was a lot of bigotry in both leagues back in the day too...
His skin color does not matter. What matters is his ability. And, I tend to get tired every time it's mentioned that 'first time a black man has done 'X'' because he should be doing 'X" due to his ability, not his color. BUT, This IS an interesting bit of trivia that is more about how long it's been since the Cubs were in the World Series than the fact that Dexter is black.
It doesn't matter at all, this is just a fun story that simply illustrates how long it's been since the lowly Cubs have been in a World Series. There are all sorts of other milestones as well such as man walked on the Moon and so on.
No worries, I can understand how it's hard to believe such an old franchise has not been in the WS in over 100 years and that this is about race but it's not really, just perspective.
the cubs lost that game 6-0. but they tied up the series earlier tonight 5-1. i didnt watch tonights game though, i didnt have any alcohol and sports can get pretty damn boring.
