Methane 9lumes 3ay 3ean 3e`re 5crewed [Pic]

Climatologists have spent decades politely warning that we are cooking our planet, but now one has decided to stop sugar coating it. Professor Jason Box of the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland tweeted If even a small fraction of Arctic sea floor carbon is released to the atmosphere, we"re fucked.

These tiny bubbles may be the scariest thing you"ll ever see.

Box was responding to research by Stockholm University reporting vast methane plumes escaping from the seafloor in the Arctic Ocean.

The scientists who made the discovery were more restrained. This was somewhat of a surprise, chief scientist Orjan Gustafsson wrote. Although there have been plenty of reports of methane plumes in the Arctic before, these have been a forewarning of danger, rather than a direct threat themselves. Microorganisms in the water column scavenge methane as it rises. Provided they can get to it before it reaches the surface the climate change damage is small.

However, at some locations the Swedish team saw bubbles reaching the surface. Dissolved methane concentrations were 10-50 times background levels, and expedition members report sniffing methane.

While there has been much speculation about the vulnerability of regular marine hydrates along the continental slopes of the Arctic rim, very few actual observations of methane releases due to collapsing marine hydrates on the Arctic slope have been made, Gustafsson wrote .

The methane was released from a steep continental shelf 250-500m beneath the Laptev Sea off Siberia. There is evidence that the last vestige of the Gulf Stream, which reaches this point having wrapped around Scandinavia, has become warmer in recent years, and this may be triggering the release.

Explorations of the Arctic Ocean are so recent we don"t know whether such events are unprecedented, but we do know the area has warmed dramatically in recent decades.

Simultaneously, evidence is building that methane release is the cause of the craters that have suddenly started appearing in other parts of Siberia . When interviewed byViceBox said if he knew the tweet was going to attract so much attention he would have included the methane in permafrost, since this could be equally dangerous, but says he doesn"t know enough about the holes to comment on their relation to climate change.

Box is a highly credentialed scientist, whose main area of research is dark snow , snow that has had soot and black carbon fall on it, speeding its melting. He blogs at Meltfactor , where he says we need an aggressive atmospheric decarbonization program. We have been too long on a trajectory pointed at an unmanageable climate calamity; runaway climate heating. If we don"t get atmospheric carbon down and cool the Arctic, the climate physics and recent observations tell me we will probably trigger the release of these vast carbon stores, dooming our kids to a hothouse Earth. Thats a tough statement to read when your worry budget is already full as most of ours is.

Kitteh: you are totally right, someone actually went up and changed the code to do this "leet" text when ever submitter left capitalization wrong. Like it`s EFFING OUR JOB to do capitalization in the first place. Look, you know it, i know it that capitalization code that wroks100% of the time is done in fcking 2 minutes. Making a code that replaces all non-capital first letters takes half an hour. They made more effort to fck US up, the submitters and visitors. Us regulars can live with this, easily. it`s the visitors, those who fcking pay the cost for keeping this site alive (all regulars have installed adblockers).

This is like someone is trying to shut this site down. Someone at Demand Media hates IAB and wants it to go away. What is the political stance of Demand Media btw?

richanddead nailed it. Read below for the rest of the story.

jaysingrimm you`re welcome. We aim to please (sometimes). We post members submissions regardless of our feelings on the subjects.

Back in January through April I started really going at it with IT trying to get things fixed (chat, the cursing filter, Title, avatar & comment glitches and the illustrious SERVER ERRORS) Well I got hooked up with the head of IT and when we got to the cursing filter, some cursing was involved and I may or may not have inadvertently offended them (I did). Well, after that, magically anything I asked to be fixed was fixed but then morphed into another glitch. Amazing what IT can do when pissed off.

Some things I can`t even tell you about (It got really nasty). `The Great IT War` will be in bookstores soon... Continued

... 2nd cont.

Suffice it to say that I fought the good fight and I know who my friends in management are now. I have voodoo dolls of said rude, obnoxious, back stabbing, vengeful, LYING, tattle-taling, non-fixing, hacktastic IT personnel, in my possession and I am doing horrible things to them. I hope my venture into the darker arts works.

I am still at war with them trying to get things fixed. Bear with me.

Thank you @kitteh!

And thank you for the post @madduck!

And thank you IAB for cutting back on certain "hot topics" that just get everyone too riled up! I do think we can all do a bit more to make IAB a friendlier place for newcomers...

@xelous:
Listen I can understand from your perspective that we should be able to simply "fix it" and the issue will be resolved. Yet the fact is it`s nowhere that simple. Demand Media runs our little site along with other sites like Cracked.com. Kitteh works her heart out on this site, far more than people know. She has brought this problem up to their attention multiple times. Demand only has so many IT guys and they focus on the biggest sites first. I know they were working on our servers in April, but they chose not to fix this bug at that time.

If you want the problem to get fixed, find ways to bring more people here. Great submissions are always a sure fire way to do it, but if you have other ideas don`t be afraid to shout them out. The more viewers we have, the higher a priority we become and the better the content becomes. But until then you essentially have as much ability to fix the title bug as we do.

Sounds like the submission engine`s got a wrench in it. Does not make sense for every word in a submission link to have a capital letter just as much as
9lumes 3ay 3ean 3e`re 5crewed
doesn`t make sense. Please fix the system instead of trying to have your users work around the known flaw.
Thank you. :-D

Whatever happens the Earth will continue

Global climate change is not yearly - its measured in millenniums. Things dont just change `Kaboom`

A simple fix is listed IN OUR RULES

TL;DR = Capitalize your titles people.

Those hole in Siberia? Some are 100s of years old... EPIC fail!

Yes, the Earth has been warming since the Little Ice Age. WE Skeptics have always said this is true. @PazerLenis keeps bringing out that strawman though...

We argue that HUMAN-CAUSED GW is not 100%, not even close! I`ve yet to see one fact to deny this.

There`s NO evidence that being a couple of degrees warmer will "DESTROY the Earth" ok? It has been MUCH warmer in the past, and everything is still around!

Climates change, they always have! Not one darn thing humans can do about it.

The Sahara Desert was once swamp land, not too long ago...

@O.O: "You guys are the ones making up a new story every week. First it was "global cooling," then it was "global warming," and now it`s "climate change."

First off, not all of those concepts have to exclude the others, secondly science is SUPPOSED to evolve and change according to new findings.

But you`re welcome to keep your "settled science" that you probably shopped for at the "Climate Depot"...

Personally, having asthma, and an auto immune disorder, I don`t think it`s such a bad thing to want cleaner air and water...

@pazerlenis You guys are the ones making up a new story every week. First it was "global cooling," then it was "global warming," and now it`s "climate change." Every time your predictions fail, instead of admitting that your theory has been thoroughly falsified, you falsify the data to support your theory until that can no longer be sustained, and then you rename it. In any case, the solution is always the same: we have to let liberals boss us around and take our stuff.

Meanwhile, my story has remained unchanged: it`s a hoax, and there`s nothing more to say about it.

"Then, only when it`s really too late, they will admit they were really trying to jump-start the Rapture."

I am hoping it is true. Weekly, I burn my garbage in a creek over top of a tree I cut down while I watch in my large SUV idling the motor. I start the fire with used motor oil and an old tire.

Well, as long as I have your word for it that everything is fine I can ignore actual scientists who have dedicated their lives to this field. Wild guess, you have no scientific qualifications at all.

"Good thing we can stop this by driving hybrids and switching to CFL light bulbs."

This is the next thing the anti-AGW crowd will start saying.

First it was, "global warming isn`t happening!"
Then they said, "Ok, it`s kinda happening, but it`s not our fault (and it could be good for us)!"
Next they will say, "It`s happening and we caused it, but your solution won`t fix it so we shouldn`t even try!"
Then, only when it`s really too late, they will admit they were really trying to jump-start the Rapture.

So, fracking should help with this, right? Drill to release natural gases which can be piped and used as a power source... j/k.

It doesn`t matter what the West does. There is enough regulation to slow our affect on the climate. However, China is frakking the entire world with their lack of care for Mother Earth.

I posted this because for quite some time the possible release of Methane was a huge worry- it probably means we simply cannot reverse things.. and it WILL matter a lot - not much of a sea level rise will take me out for starters- and those once in every hundred year weather events have been happening every year now for about 6 years...anecdotal I know but.

Here we go again. More "climate change" BS. If people bothered to look at the actual data, they`d realize that these scientists are just whipping up media frenzy to secure more funding for their "work." Relax. Even the worst case scenarios, made up by these hoaxers, wouldn`t affect the human population for about 100 generations."

I hope you live in one of those eastern US cities that is slightly below sea level and protected by a flimsy dyke.

I believe you call them levees. I was not referring to Ellen de Generes.

lol @spentmiles. I trust the scientists I follow. They believe there`s enough evidence to believe that AGW is possible. Climate change is undeniable. To say we don`t affect our environment is disingenuous. Remember when there was a lot of lead poisoning and issues with lead in the United States. WE were/are the cause of the rise of lead poisoning, mercury, etc. We just fail to realize how much we really do.

I`ve heard a lot about the Methane releases. I`d like to read more about it but from what I understand its way more dangerous than Carbon Dioxide is. I`m not exactly for carbon taxes and that kind of stuff that Al Gore wants but we do need to do something.

@spentmiles,
Really, because we had flooding here. First time ever. We got several days of rain in a few hours. We`ve also started seeing tornadoes here. Something that is completely new to the area.
