Even for a comedian, he makes a pretty strong point.

In the 80`s, it was discovered most stomach ulcers were caused by a bacteria (Helicobacter) that could be cured with a course of antibiotics, instead of a lifelong treatment of useless drugs to suppress acid.

Several infectious diseases have been cured, and even more still have been virtually eliminated through preventative measures such as vaccines. Even some forms of cancer can be eliminated.

The truth is, Science and Medicine evolve slowly. Understanding the various mechanisms of a disease is no small feat. Finding treatments that won`t harm the patient in the process is difficult. Additionally, academic and industry researchers have not always been quick to share their findings, allowing for multiple teams to look down the same wrong path.

While incremental advancements have been made with some of the more difficult to treat diseases, they are often met with little fanfare.

It`s a lot easier to ask for a cure than to find one.

It might be worth pointing out that with the polio vaccines introduction in 1955, the number of cases in the US dropped from 35,000 in 1953 to 5,600 in 1957. By 1961, only 161 cases were reported.

As HIV and AIDS are often contracted through sexual activity, the use of a condom is recommended, and can significantly reduce the risks.

Roughly 50,000 people contract HIV in the US every year (A number that has remained steady for a decade).

Perhaps it`s easier to convince some people to get a vaccine than wear a rubber?

Angillon,

How can you really be that naive?

A drug company has 2 options, sell you a cure.. Lose you as a customer.

Sell you something that will keep you alive perpetually and you represent cash perpetually.

Do you REALLY think a company would ever cure you when they can sell you "stay alive" drugs forever? That is absolute nonsense.

You are talking about POTENTIAL money, their MIGHT be a halo effect, they MIGHT be able to sell more of their other drugs, etc.

Instead of cold hard cash in hand every single month. I can`t imagine a company that would even consider risking such a thing.

Dr. Salk was a saint, who refused to take money for creating the polio vaccine.

"It would be if it weren`t overrun by liberal idiots always trying to boss people around and take their stuff."

Because goodness knows your success occurs in a vacuum and has *Nothing* to do with society et.al. and the infrastructure that is in place providing an educated populace to draw a workforce from, transportation and roads, utlitlites, protection form fire and crime, and on and on and on......

Yes, this country would be such a wonderful paradise if there were no government structure in place requiring our financial support to manifest a Republic under the rule of law.

Yes.... What a fecking lovely UTOPIA this un-nation would be.....::facepalm::

You absolute moron.

Funny you would bring up the cure for polio as an example for creating a cure for aids. Aids created while manufacturing poilio vacine.

Forum, FLAME ON!

Chicagojay...We cured polio, last major disease we cured and they lost TRILLIONS...granted many of these diseases are making a comeback in the US, why? Because all of the illegal immigration of people who have never been vaccinated bringing these diseases back to the US.

No, Angillion, that is now how it works in the Untited States. it takes a company YEARS and BILLIONS of Dollars to get a drug approved by the FDA, then they have to patent the formula and the patent is only good for a few years then other companies can make generic versions of the drug. The only real way to make the kind of profits the drug companies want to make, a cure is not the answer, a drug that allows you to live wiith the disease is.

Since they never claimed their world is perfect, you`re just making stuff up. Like Chris Rock.

A drug company that made a cure for AIDS would make a fortune;

They be able to sell a lot of it at a huge markup.

They would be able to sell it continuously for years. A cure doesn`t make a virus cease to exist. That can only be done by universal vaccination and only for germs that can only exist in the species that has been universally vaccinated against it.

They would have a halo effect like no other. A trillion dollar advertising campaign couldn`t buy anything like that. They could sell more of everything they make off the back of it.

Even if you ignore everything apart from money, the "won`t make a cure" argument is still blatantly false.
