Oh, and don`t forget to add the effect-enhancing perks in alchemy, enchanting and smithing before you start making your potions and gear.

Detailed guide here:

Balance? What`s that?
The real path to follow in this game is to maximize blacksmith. Once you do that you become Odin on earth. You can go around with your over powerfull armour killing thugs with bare hands.
If you want to go the whole nine yards, you want to maximise alchemy, enchanting and smithing and learn the enchantments you want for your gear. You then combine alchemy and enchanting to make maxxed items of fortify alchemy and maxxed items of fortify smithing. Then you wear the alchemy items while creating potions of fortify smithing and potions of fortify enchanting. Wear the fortify smithing items, drink the fortify smithing potions and smith and improve your gear, then drink the potions of fortify enchanting and enchant it with the magic you want.

Pick the right enchantments, train the skills and add the right perks and you`re easily the most powerful force on the planet in both defence and offence.

Scale - there are hundreds of areas, large areas of internally consistent countryside, hundreds of NPCs, hundreds of quests. I`ve played for ~150 hours and I haven`t even started the main quest (Dragonborn) or the secondary quest (civil war). You could easily spend 100 hours just walking around looking for places to explore (anything nearby, such as a cave or town or ruin, appears on your compass as a gray symbol which turns white when you reach it).

Variety - you can develop your character in various ways, since skills advance by using them. Want to be a heavily armoured sword-wielding mage? No problem. It might not be efficient, but it`s your choice. Or leave all the adventuring behind and be a merchant, a smith, an alchemist.

And it`s very well made - high quality voice acting, etc. There are also hundreds of mods for the PC version, for all sorts of things.

It`s the guard barracks, which makes it more disconcerting.

I had some issues with Skyrim as much as I loved it. For example.. solve the entire story line of the civil war - there are "generals" out in the wilderness you can`t kill, and townsfolk don`t seem to recognize you as the person who killed 100`s of the enemy and put whoever back in power.

I just started replaying this last week... its still an awesome game, a game that takes at least 200 constant hours of gameplay is good value for money in my book.

Haven`t played this game in a long time. There was a cool trick where you can drop under the city and grab stuff out of hidden chests. Ahhh...invisible chests. Saved my ass many times!

Love the game and can`t wait to play the PC version. Although I firmly believe that they`ll have redone the game by then.

One day.. I`ll have a PC strong enough to play Skyrim.. I`m just happy, right now, that I can play Oblivion and Fallout: New Vegas.
