Zismo ~ What`s the difference? Size of membership?
What is that critical cut off point?
Under a million? Under a hundred thousand? Under ten thousand?

[Btw; How long was Christianity a "Cult" before it became a valid religion? A couple of centuries if I remember my theology correctly.]

Or is is just based on the fact that their crazy. made-up schitt is unbelievable while your crazy made-up schitt makes perfect sense?

@CrakrJak

How about the fact that Rabbi Hillel said it first, two ways.
(1) "If I am not for myself who is for me? And being for my own self, what am `I`? And if not now, when?"
(2) "That which is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow. That is the whole Torah; the rest is the explanation; go and learn."

Hillel was a venerated Pharisee elder, no wonder the New testament steals his phrasing and demonizes the Pharisees. Hillel the Elder

Crakr:

Mark 12-30 says "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength"

So I don`t get it do you love your neighbour more than your god or do you love you god with ALL your heart and soul?

I find it rather comical and amusing when mainstream religions mock the smaller ones. Every religions on Earth is full of bat s hit crazy nonsense.

"LordJim -- Are you saying that the "illusion of validity" exempts an organization of being "crazy"?"

No. that`s pretty much the opposite of what I think.

5Cats: "He forgot (...) Dianetics"

Uh, no, "Dianetics" comes from L. Ron Hubbard, and is a part of Scientology, which was #10 on the list. He even specifically mentioned the book, "Dianetics", in his discussion of the group (though he slightly messed up the crazy back story of Scientology).

Also, I`ve heard stories about a religion that believes that they eat the actual flesh and drink the actual blood of their god. Creepy, eh? I think it`s called Cathonalism or something like that? ;-)

Ah come on, its not that crazy. All you have to do is limit your own interaction with mainstream society and have a very "creative" person interpret the information that you do get, for you.

Or you can be like everyone else, and join a congregation every sunday. Which is completely different.

Jake -- I wasn`t mixing them up, they were just the two first things that came to my head. I`m sorry I could have picked a better example.

LordJim -- Are you saying that the "illusion of validity" exempts an organization of being "crazy"?

@Rodin

"Things like people rising from the dead and imaculate conception maybe?"

You`re probably referring to the Virgin Birth here. The "Immaculate Conception" and the "Virgin Birth" are two different things. The doctrine of the Immaculate Conception teaches that the Virgin Mary was conceived without Original Sin on her soul. The doctrine of the Virgin Birth teaches that Jesus was born of a virgin, a woman who had never had sexual relations.

A lot of people always mix them up, even those who claim to believe in them. Most of us couldn`t care less about the distinction, but It makes an atheist look unprepared to mix-up the two in a serious discussion.

Rodin,

Then I don`t understand your question. Probably my fault.

LordJim -- The post doesn`t say anything about validity it`s claim is "The 10 craziest religions of the world". Not the craziest cults or pretend religions. I`m not claiming that these are religions at all. And I`m not asking "why is Christianity any more valid than these `religions`?"

Rodin,

Age does not confer validity. It confers the illusion of validity.

Nice one.

That may have been one of the very few times I`ve agreed with you.

So I`m gathering that LordJim and Davy are saying that these are cults and not religions because they haven`t been around for long enough.

Scientology is recognized as an official religion in most countries even though they have only been around since the 50`s. So to simplify my question: "How is Scientology any crazier than Christianity?"

"To reword my question -- how are these religions any crazier than Christianity? "

They aren`t. They just lack the gravitas that comes with time. For me vicarious redemption through blood sacrifice is obscene and primitive, to others it`s uplifting.

Lordjim beat me to it.

One individual: seriously mentally ill, delusional, probably committed to psychiatric care.

Some adherents: crazy cult.

Enough adherents + time: official world "religion"

LordJim -- I under stand your "time+numbers" statement but that doesn`t make it any less crazy. The creator of the video is claiming that these religions are crazy because they are clearly based on works of fiction, believe in interstellar travel and some other crazy things. Things like people rising from the dead and imaculate conception maybe?

My question is not "why is Christianity an accepted religion?". To reword my question -- how are these religions any crazier than Christianity?

Rodin,
"How is Christianity not the number 1 item on this list?"

Antiquity. Scientology and Mormonism are pretty recent so we can all see the crazy, but a couple of thousand years of theodicy will cover that up, to an extent.

The Romans regarded christianity and Judaism as equally iniquitous in that they both denied the validity of anybody else`s beliefs and were consequently potentially trouble in a diverse empire. Until the Jewish Revolt Judaism got a pass because it was old. Christianity didn`t because it was new. Also because the whole wine/bread = blood/flesh thing wasn`t very well articulated so a lot of people genuinely believed they were cannibals.

Crazy cult to respected religion = time+numbers.

so here`s a list of crazy religions based on works of fiction; most involve interdimensional or interstellar travel, and have some screwed up rules. How is Christianity not the number 1 item on this list?
