It`s the Monday or Friday, whichever is closest to the actual date, the goal being for most to have 3 days off from work (really.)

That makes sense, CodeJockey. I live in Canada, and here Canada Day (1st July) is our equivalent, but it falls on whatever day it falls. Which this year was a tuesday. Pointless - I`d much rather it be rolled forward or backward to make a long weekend, what use is a day off in the middle of the week, dammit!

"CodeJockey please tell me you are kidding."

That`s what I was thinking.. we may have a Monday or Friday observance of Independence Day but I`m pretty sure the 4th of July always falls on the fourth day in July lol

"I`m pretty sure the 4th of July always falls on the fourth day in July lol"
People refer to it as "The 4th of July holiday." It`s official name is "Independence Day." It`s trigger date is July 4th but, is not always observed on that date.
Next year, it will be observed on July 3rd.

How can you live in America for some 4 decades but manage to never pay attention?

The 4th of July is ALWAYS celebrated on the 4th day of July.
*If* your employer gives you federal holidays off then you get the day off.
If it falls on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or a Thursday you don`t get a 3-day weekend out of it.
If it falls on a Saturday or a Sunday, you get the following Monday off.

"The 4th of July is ALWAYS celebrated on the 4th day of July. "
Different states may have different culture but, next year, July 4th is a Saturday and Independence Day will be observed on the Friday, July 3rd.
