Link: It Was A Different Time - I wonder how many materials we use today are going to be discovered to cause cancer in 50 years

As far as I understand it, once built they are perfectly safe. it`s the dust- so if it gets damaged you are in trouble! Plenty of places with asbestos roofs still around.... expensive to remove though.

There are products on the market that can cause the same respiratory problems, they are required to carry warning labels. It`s just that asbestos has been banned/restricted.

It is likely to be of an asbestos that is perfectly safe. In 1994 I visited a serpentinite quarry for my university geology course. That is the source of white asbestos, commonly used in cement. There is no evidence this is harmful.

Asbestos has many useful properties. It was eventually found to be `bad for you`.

In reality, the only people it turned out to be bad for was:
    1) The people who mined it &
    2) The people who had to remove it once someone found out it was `bad for you`.

This kind of asbestos is relatively harmless. It`s the loose friable form that`s dangerous.
