Ex-Israeli Soldier Speaks Out...

Submitted by: paperduck 2 years ago in

See summarised key points mentioned from this lecture below.

The talk by Eran Efrati was filmed in Denver, Colorado on March 3, 2014 as part of The Soldier and the Refusenik U.S. tour with Maya Wind. Eran talk about his experiences in the IDF and then more broadly discusses Israel, its relationship to the U.S. and the global expansion of militarism.

Eran Efrati, 28, was born and raised in Jerusalem. After graduating high school he enlisted in the IDF, where he served as a combat soldier and company sergeant in Battalion 50 of the Nachal Division. He spent most of his service in Hebron and throughout the West Bank. In 2009, he was discharged and joined Breaking the Silence, an organization of veteran Israeli soldiers working to raise awareness about the daily reality in the Occupied Territories. He worked as the chief investigator of the organization, collecting testimonies from IDF soldiers about their activities. He also guided political tours and to the West Bank and worked to educate Israeli youth about the reality of being a soldier in an occupying army. His collected testimonies appear in the booklet Operation Cast Lead and their most recent release Our Harsh Logic. Since leaving Breaking the Silence, his investigative reports appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Guardian. Today he is active with the Israeli groups Anarchists Against the Wall and Boycott from Within.

Key points from this lecture

  1. There is a heavy indoctrination in Israel, from an early age in schools, which uses the holocaust to create paranoia and fear against the enemy
  2. Israeli soldiers are trained intensively for a war, whilst their actual military duties are to subdue and control Palestinians
  3. Israeli soldiers routinely humiliate, intimidate, arrest, beat and kill civilian Palestinians to protect illegal Jewish settlers in occupied territories
  4. Many Israeli soldiers are aware what they are doing is wrong, but have no way out and feel pressured to continue
  5. Palestinians who require medical attention, have to go through military checkpoints to do this they require permits
    • They give these permits to lawyers of Doctors without borders and then prevent them from going to the West Bank meaning Palestinians do not receive permits
    • Israel uses a clever process to cover itself legally to the world
  6. DuringOperation Cast Lead, Israeli soldiers were traumatised and confused the atrocities they saw in Gaza
    • Israel would bomb civilian areas to clear the way for Israeli ground forces, use tank shells, air-strikes and illegalwhite phosphorus
  7. When wanting to speak out, via the Breaking the Silence Campaign the Haaretz newspaper refused to publish soldier testimonies after pressure by IDF Spokesman
    • Breaking the Silence campaign itself was censored by the IDF Spokesman
    • All media in Israel has to go through the IDF censorship
  8. The Israeli government and military make a lot of money by selling its weapons to other repressive regimes around the world,
  9. Israel tries and tests its weapons on Palestinians this is not (just) an occupation this is a laboratory for Israeli military weapons
  10. Israel uses undercover units in the occupied territories to start riots, and then justify the use of weapons against Palestinian protesters
  11. All police departments in the US are trained by the Israeli military and are taught the same brutal tactics used against Palestinians
  12. US police departments have already used such tactics in suppressing protests in the US, such as the Occupy movement
  13. Hit Israel where it hurts the most, boycott Israel

Everybody knows, the apartheid regime will stop. The question is how fast, and how many people are going to die until it will happen?

@whosaidwhat I understand your point. Maybe he meant some and said all, or incorrectly believes that point. If it was a lone individual in a sea of otherwise colorful first-person accounts, I would be perfectly content dismissing much of what he said. However, there`s many other personal accounts and whole websites dedicated to so-called "refuseniks" who refuse to serve in the IDF on moral grounds that corroborate with testimonials of Palestinians and reports of human rights groups. So I feel warrant listening. One such example site is here..

@paperduck

Throwing out the baby with the bath water? Not at all. If I told flagrant, easily dis-proven lies like that, would you believe anything I said?

Again, someone uploads a video of ONE PERSON claiming stuff, and everyone thinks it`s true and represents anything.
If you do 5 mins of research (google even) you`ll find pretty quickly he`s an "arab-jew-femenist activist" (his words). Putting it simply, he`s pro anything that will give him enough attention and money (donations accepted on his website). And if those won`t work, he`ll probably be pro-animal-rigts or something else.

I just find it hard to belive an arab who supposedly grew up, studied and served in the IDF(?!) in Israel. Just doesn`t add up.

Anyway, the entire video/texts are pure bull. If you don`t think this guy is an arab propaganda just go check his facebook page (yea those are arab letters/signes in the pictures around!).

If you want an Israeli soldier to tell you what`s going on in the IDF, find an authentic one yourself and ask him, it`s not hard. Just don`t eat the poo served directly into ur mouth.

@llaa: One airport almost -20- years ago is a "far cry" from EVREY police force in the USA... not arguing! Just sayin...

No doubt: They`ve helped other security forces, that just makes common sense! And other intelligence forces have helped them too.

But still not REMOTELY like what is suggested here... eh?

llaa: If the TSA was taught by Shin Bet, it wouldn`t be hell on earth to try and get on a plane these days.

El Al profiles it`s customers, weeks in advance, they do background checks, check on your accommodations, rental car, business, etc. If you purchase a ticket last minute or your background has flaws they`ll screen you more thoroughly.

The way we do it sucks and leads to 80 year old grandmothers getting cavity searched, which is ridiculous.

Shin Bet does train security and designs security protocols around the world. Chicago O`Hare`s security system was designed by Shin Bet back in the late 90s.

Listypoos: I don`t know where your "rich playboys" tirade came from, but it`s completely off base.

"the obvious conclusion is that maybe", you should try laying off the caffeine next time, because in your raging type rush you couldn`t even spell Occam correctly.

@whosaidwhat I don`t disagree on your point, he may have misspoke on that point, but wasn`t that peripheral information? Aren`t you throwing out the baby with the bath water?

"I have a feeling this guy is saying this crap for the same reasons Kerry did then, for attention and political points."

Yeah, some people lie like that... like I have this feeling that rather than fat, lazy wasters who complain poo like `oh i can`t work... i can`t do anything [type type type type...keyboard tappity tap..writing war and peace in their spaz time]... they`re really immaculately dressed rich playboys just saying they`re ugly fat right-wingers... for attention.

Or we could take the Occamm`s razor approach and admit, that if he`s been there and done it.. then telling people about it... well, let`s face it, the obvious conclusion is that maybe he`s just telling the truth.

There are steadfast liberals in every culture. John Kerry once falsely claimed that his fellow boat mates killed Vietnamese indiscriminately. That lie came back to haunt him when he vied to be president.

I have a feeling this guy is saying this crap for the same reasons Kerry did then, for attention and political points.

@piperfawn: "Jews make the best anti-Semites" - Old Jewish Saying.

YES! He could be the most vicious anti-Semite since STALIN as far as I know or care.
I can base my reply on the text posed, at least I`m honest enough to admit I didn`t watch the video NOR AM I commenting on it. Unlike MANY members of the IAB Liberal Brigade... (not picking on you @piperfawn).

Thanks @WhoSaidWhat: That`s a WHOPPER of a lie, isn`t it? And right there, plain as daylight.
Still: they swallowed it. Amazing.

I have to back 5Cats on this one, due to one sentence:

"All police departments in the US are trained by the Israeli military and are taught the same brutal tactics used against Palestinians"

That is a blatant lie. While I don`t doubt that the situation in Israel is horrible, I refuse to listen to anything else this guy says. If he had said "some police departments", or even "most police departments", I might believe him. But with a flat out lie like what I referenced above, I don`t believe anything he says. This is nothing more than propaganda. Both sides (Israel and Hamas) are at fault, and are acting like a bunch of two-year-olds fighting over a toy.

This is exactly the problem, you think it`s a waste of time to watch this video. Do you think that this israeli soldier coming from a zionist family is an antisemite? If you say so,i`m sorry but you loose credibility.

@Zeegrr60: Huh? That`s HIGHLY oversimplified!

How about... John Kerry? HE DENOUNCED his own nation, but now he`s their #3 representative! Just one example of hundreds...

How about the deserter Obama traded terrorists for? He defected to the enemy... Soldiers are "people" after all, they "go nuts" in a variety of ways, just like everyone.

@piperfawn: My comments are directed at the text provided, I`m not wasting 40 minutes on lies and propaganda, NOR am I commenting on it! UNLIKE many IAB Liberals, who don`t even LOOK before they attack, I have read the text. It`s (mostly) garbage.

The world should end all military and quasi-military support of Israel and impose a total embargo war and implement meaningful sanctions.

#8 So?
#10 Now that`s "tinfoil hat" terriroty: You`re claiming that residents of GAZA cannot tell the difference between an IDF Jew and their OWN CLERICS in the Mosques? F-dat, it`s absolute crap.
