Just disconnect the doorbell and lay out a mat that says, "F*U*C*K OFF."
why not simply switch the doorbell off?
Because then they`ll bang on the door and make even more of a racket.

why not just put "bell broken"

Because that`s lame and boring, have a sense of humor

@OldOllie - Some people don`t like having their doorbell rung because they`re made to be heard throughout the whole house, unlike a typical knock on the door. I`m an electrician, been on several jobs doing work in someones home where they asked me if I could also disconnect their doorbell because it annoyed them or woke their kids up or whatever. People are going to knock on your door sometimes whether you like it or not, that`s life.

Because neither of those suggestions would stop people from pounding on the door.

Disconnecting the doorbell is the easiest thing to do. You can leave the button there and let people press it all they want if you don`t want to take the time to patch the hole.

Fwoggie2 - just tell them you don`t have one and, no, they cannot come in and check. Job done.

I ignore my doorbell. The only people likely to be ringing it will be the TV licence people, wanting 340 euros (and climbing).

I`d post a sign reading, "Do not ring door bell or knock unless you are expected. If you want me to answer the door, call first. If you do not know my number, go away. If you ring or knock anyway, I will place you under citizen`s arrest for criminal trespassing and hand you over to the police.
