    Water is the strong stuff
    It carries whales and ships
But water is the wrong stuff
Don`t let it get past your lips
    It rots your books
    It wets your suits
Puts aches in all your bones
    Dilute the stuff with whiskey
Aye, or leave it well alone

(Robin Williamson - "Rab`s Last Woolen Testament")

ferdy, it`s a great song. Give a listen.

Turns out that line is "It`ll rust your boots," not "It rots your books." It`s been decades since I heard the song.

This quote is not by Franklin at all. Bacteria, or "animalcules," as they were first called, were first observed by Antoni van Leeuwenhoek in 1676; however, they were not associated with disease until Louis Pasteur proposed his germ theory in the 1870`s.

Also, a true scientist, of which Franklin was one, would have known that "bacteria" is the plural of "bacterium" and would have used a plural verb.

That was the original purpose of beer, not making women permissive. That was a pleasant side-effect
