The amusing part of this post is that Einstein`s relativity formulae are necessary for GPS.

Before it was TV..... before that it was radio.

In the early 1600`s critics said the reading of books would lead to people becoming disassociated with reality.

So when I hear stuff like this being said yet again about the current technological vogue, I think ...... meh.

No, it isn`t. This has all been tried before. It failed then, and it will fail again. The only difference is, in the past, the people didn`t know what was happening to them; today, they don`t care.

A) Einstein never said this. (source: Quote Investigator)

B) All of these people are likely interacting with other people through things like text messaging. What you`re seeing *IS* human interaction, it`s just being done via. technology.

C) Obviously these people got together for social interaction, they just did this as well.

D) Humanity is getting around 3 IQ points smarter every 10 years. This is known as the Flynn effect.

So, this is all wrong on multiple levels.

However- the printing press was a HUGE leap.. we have done this before, and if we get a chance I am sure we will do it again.

@Ilikelogic

The quote from Socrates simply demonstrates that older generations have always criticized the younger. But it falls short of the reality here. The introduction of a ubiquitous technology that can literally alter behavioral patters (and the manner in which people communicate) on a mass scale is something the ancient world never had a to deal with. It`s a valid concern, not just older people griping.

"The gadgets, not their users, are supposed to be the tools."

I like that!

Our youth now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for their elders and love chatter in place of exercise; they no longer rise when elders enter the room; they contradict their parents, chatter before company; gobble up their food and tyrannize their teachers.
Socrates, around 400 BC

I`m in the middle of reading Brave New World and this topic is a major plot point.

A generation of people that can`t stand (or don`t know how) to be alone with themselves. Without the constant input from devices, you have to think, reflect, remember, make mental connections, know yourself, maybe read a little, etc. The gadgets, not their users, are supposed to be the tools.

Doesn`t take an Einstein to believe this.
Just a competent human with foresight. These people whomever they are, far and wide, important and unimportant to me and everyone else. Is mindless.

Common sense is now Rare sense and sociability is now "who`s edgiest and funner". People respect stupidity yet play smug to true intellectuals.
I could go on further but it would only insight selfrage. People are stupid and I know I am not "one of the many". I take pride in this knowledge.
