There cannot possibly be 1 million colors in that image. There are only ~2 million pixels in a 1920 x 1080 HD monitor, and that image is considerably less than half of the screen.

    Still, cool stuff.

@OldOllie: The image is 1000x1000, which is 1 million pixels in that image. You may be displaying the image smaller than that on the web page, however the original image likely does have 1 million different colors, assuming the JPEG was saved properly to preserve the chrominance and luminance data. (If it were saved as PNG instead of JPEG I`d be more confident that it really does have 1 million colors.)

That said, the human eye/brain is completely unable to discern the difference between many of those colors, especially the darker ones.

@HiEv I think maybe you got me on a technicality. My browser is set to a zoom factor of 100%, but the image only displays at 640 x 640. That is because the HTML code specifies width="640". So, THIS image does not contain 1 million colors However, if I right-click it, copy it, and paste it into Irfanview, it is indeed 1000 x 1000. I, too, doubt seriously, though, that it still has 1 million unique colors after going through jpeg compression. A bitmap this size would be more than 2 Gb.

@OldOllie: It`s the same image, it`s just your browser scales it down, so some colors aren`t displayed.

Also, your math is wrong. Each pixel in a full color BMP is 24-bits, which is 3 bytes, one byte for red, green, and blue each. So 1,000,000 pixels x 3 bytes = 3 MB (SI) or ~2.86 MB. I have no idea how you got "more than 2 GB" from that.

There is a way to get a JPEG to store the colors correctly, but you`d have to create the DCUs (the blocks that make up JPEG images) manually.

Ok so the single picture one blew my freakin mind. The one with a million colors trips you out if you look at it long enough.

Ollie, IMHO, is one of the most intelligent commenters here on IAB. I always look out for his avatar, to see what he has to say.
