What The Earth Would Look Like Without Water [Gif]

Just watch it for a minute and imagine. Seems like a pretty legit model.

The Earth`s diameter is 7,918 Miles, Mt. Everst is approximately 5.5 miles above Sea Level and the Marianna trench is approximately 6.8 miles below sea level.

Even without oceans Earth comparatively would be smoother than a Cue Ball albeit not as round since there is a slight bulge in the middle.

And one more fact, the deepest we have ever drilled into the earth would be less than the thickness of the skin on an apple.

An image without a source or explanation is pretty useless.

This is the visual equivalent of the phase: "Look how High."
Meaningless without context.

I don`t think it has anything to do with water. It is a representation of the gravity surface anomaly from an oblate spheroid. Possibly based upon the WGS84 as it is pretty close to zero in North America. Anomaly exaggerated to a huge degree of course on the model, but represented by the colours.

I don`t think that`s meant to be a physical model.

It looks like a temperature graph showing deviation from average.

Yeah they went nuts with the elevation differences. The Earth is more spherical than this.

The diameter of the earth is about 8000 miles. The range of the opposing shaded areas is 190m. Therefore, the globe portrayed here is grossly exaggerated.

Also, Sri Lanka looks to be at the bottom of the world`s deepest ocean. So that`s borked.

The difference between the South Pacific and the Indian Ocean ... I don`t friggin` think so. Not to mention I thought the deepest part of the ocean was in the Atlantic, not the Indian Ocean.

[edit] the gravity thing I`d buy.

So, the earth without water resembles a giant Chinese meat bun?

Yeah if the earth were shrunk to the size of a billiard ball it would be perfectly smooth to the touch. this picture is just bad.

I think OldOllie nailed it. Nothing to add.

Although I don`t agree with the shape we really do take for granted how lucky we are to have all that water. And that wafer thin atmosphere holding us all in place.
And yet still we don`t take care of it.

This is just total bull$#!+. The difference between the highest point on earth (Mt. Everest) and the lowest point in the ocean (Marianas Trench) is about 0.15% of the earth`s diameter, which at the scale of this picture would be considerably less than 1 pixel.

Why is most of India under water on this map?

VV @LegerDemain: ooo! Gravitational variances would explain that nicely, notice Hudson`s Bay?

It`s interesting that the northern part of the Atlantic Ocean is one of the highest points of the earth. I would have thought that the ocean floor would be below sea level if it was a map of the earth without the water. I think it`s a map of the gravitational variances of the earth, but I`m not sure.
