I`ve got a good vintage Star Trek convention story. It was around 1974 at the NYC convention. My buddies and I got to the ballroom early for some panel discussion or movie. We scored a little box of seats in the loge section overlooking the room. It was the first box, right next to the hallway door.

All of a sudden, I noticed that everyone down in the ballroom had stopped what they were doing and were staring up at us. It was weird. I turned around ... and there was James Doohan standing next to us. He was smiling and started shaking our hands, saying "Hi, how are you" to each of us. Then, he headed back out into the hallway.

Doohan was a nice guy. He probably walked by the open door, saw us there, and decided to stop in and say hello. You know it`s your favorite convention memory when Scotty comes over to you, instead of the other way around.

DInVen, I don`t know how it is now, but original Star Trek fans were voracious readers. In the days before video games and social media, that`s what science-fiction fans did. Not counting anthology shows like The Outer Limits and The Twilight Zone, Star Trek was the first sci-fi show to feature writers the caliber of D.C. Fontana, Theodore Sturgeon, David Gerrold, etc. Early trekkies were a smart, sometimes off-the-wall, crowd.

Great post, thanks. Is it just me or were people (disregard Asimov) more eloquent back then?

I would recommended this unique "behind" Star Trek book to anyone interested in how it all started and unfolded: "Inside Star Trek: The Real Story" by Herbert F. Solow and Robert H. Justman
