Syria calls in North Korea to monitor its presidential election

Syrians began voting Tuesday in a farcical election almost certain to hand President Bashar al-Assad another seven-year term. Government forces provided heavy security at more than 9,000 polling stations in government-controlled areas. State employees said they had been told they had to vote or face interrogation. Opposition groups urged Syrians to boycott the “blood election,” and rebels said anyone not staying home was a legitimate military target. But in perhaps the most telling example of the election”s illegitimacy, North Korea joined Zimbabwe, Russia, and Iran to monitor the voting. Per The New York Times: While Mr. Assads international opponents have branded the election a farce, election observers were on hand Tuesday from North Korea a country even less tolerant of dissent than Syria as well as from Mr. Assads allies Iran and Russia, along with Brazil, Zimbabwe and others. Syria and North Korea`s governments would be vastly improved with the application of a few medium-yield nukes.

What exactly do you want him to do? Send in troops? That would be very stupid.

Are you really advocating more US intervention in Syria? Bad idea. Whose side should he take? Boots on the ground? Air strikes? No-fly zones? Drones? Sanctions ? But sanctions against what that isn`t already sanctioned?

    What should the president do?

Wow! You have a nuke that just does governments?

Why do you dislike the governments of Iran and NK? Did they do something to you? Because unless it`s personal neither have had any identifiable impact on the life of most westerners.

Our governents have devious and disturbing relations with these places based on money and power but for the rest of us it`s just a news item. Why would you nuke them.

A lot of people dislike these governments because they consist of thoroughly horrible people doing ghastly things to their own people
and their immediate neighbours. Nukes don`t really help in that situation.

It would be like objecting to your neighbour openly brutalising his family and expressing that by fire-bombing the house with the family in it.

You`re right. BoredFrank`s suggestion is a bit of overkill but, on an emotional level, I can understand it. If your neighbor brutalises his family you may just turn a blind eye. If he also threatens yours you may need to do something about it. I suspect that North Korea and Iran would threaten the world if they thought they could actually get away with it. A nuke in Pyongyang and Tehran would, unfortunately, kill an awful lot of innocent civilians but I wouldn`t find myself mourning the loss of those countries` governments.

Nuking Tehran would be the exact opposite of what you want. The theocratic thuggery is difused across the country. The progressive opposition (currently keeping it`s head down for obvious reasons) is largely in the urban areas.

@LordJim: Obama has waffled and twirled his thumbs since this crisis began YEARS ago!

Yet in Libya? The mere RUMOUR of atrocities and he invaded! Then pulled out without ANY plan and now that country is veering back to civil war, again.

So what have we learned about Obama`s Presidency? >He won`t act unless the French say it`s OK.

The "Arab Spring" Obama was once so proud of has turned into a nightmare, but he won`t take any responsibility or do anything to even TRY to resolve it.

George W. Bush lied to start 2 wars with no exit strategy. Bush is the reason America`s economy collapsed. Stop blaming the half-black guy for the white guys damage.

Nice revisionist history you have going there 5cats.
We did NOT invade Libya. Not a single American soldier`s boot hit the ground there.

But I wouldn`t expect someone who is brainwashed daily by Fox News and AM Talk Radio to have a grasp on reality.

    "..and Barack won`t do poo."

And what should he do you encephalitic, inbred moron? Go in guns blazing?

Why not let that part of the world take care of it`s own problems instead of us sticking our fudgeing noses into everybody else`s business and making the problems worse all just for the sake of empire building or corporate profits.

The sanction`s he has put into place are more than appropriate and the only aid we are supplying is food and medicine.

You warhawks need to fudgeing suck on the barrels of your own weapons. Maybe that will calm you bloodlust and save us from another economic disaster.
