How much area would it take to power the entire world using solar power?

Let me guess without looking..
someone said in the cvomments: "it will wreck the economy"

Marco Rubio (and also other Freedom Partner aka Koch brother sponsored loud mouths and even Koch brothers them selves) verbatim quote: "proposed laws to deal with climate change will only wreck our economy."

Don`t you guys think there is something wrong when you are quoting verbatim the ones that benefit from the status quo fo drating polluting our planet?

Yeah, go drat yourselves IAB climate skeptics and resident clean energy opposition, you are working for the evil. If you don`t know it, you are idiots, if you do know: you are corrupt.

I have solar on my house. Generates more electricity than I use. Electric company pays me money back.

Only reason I got a bigger system than I needed is to allow for a pool or a plug-in car in the future.

My electric bill was $285/month. My payment on my solar panels is $165/month.

@normalfreak2: They`ve been saying "50 years of oil left" for the past... 40 years!
New methods come along...
The Alberta Oil Sands have more oil than the Middle East...

And stuff like that. Oh yes! It will run out eventually.

@Angilion: Yup! I`ve run the gauntlet of IAB Rejection letters! Lolz!

I even got one for one that I got posted that day! I was puzzled but that one... perhaps I`d hit "refresh" and double suggested? LOLZ! Rejuected for reposting my own post? :-)

Lately the @Mods have been kindly attaching notes to some of them: it`s a repost, or `you forgot the url`
nice, i got an email about a link i submitted being a repost, took me a few searches to find the same video from 3 years ago, but c`mon i get this posted and the next day someone gets away with this sh*t.
I can beat that - I got one of those emails and mine wasn`t a repost at all. I did find a different video about something different that had some things in common, but that was the closest I could get.

Heck BP just yesterday released a statement that at current production rates we have ~50 years of oil. There is ONE certainty here. Earth will dry up, fossil fuels aren`t going to last forever. BP could be over exaggerating but honestly imagine the chaos that would happen if we didn`t have a backup plan in place for power.....

roughly 280km by 280km (or about 165m by 165m for the Americans here). Which is as near as makes no difference half the size of NY state.

"Couldn`t we use a less useful part of the earth, such as Detroit?"

Yeah, that largest square looks like it`s about 10,000x the size of NYC. On the other hand, you could fill up that smallest square with nuclear power plants and probably power the world for the next 1000 years.

Exactly, because it would be phenomenally expensive, far more expensive than current sources of power. There is no scale given here, but I can tell you that those squares are huge.
