Many dictionaries and history books say the term came about in reference to the of what is now Newfoundland, Canada. The Beothuk were said to paint their bodies with red ochre, leading white settlers to refer to them as "red men." Wanna try that sign again?

What about the Chiefs and the Cowboys ... aren`t they just as offensive?
Little people are probably offended by the Giants.
Electric car owners are offended by the Pistons.
Greenpeace wants to release the Dolphins.
Mexicans are tired of hearing about the Browns being beaten.
Christians hate the Devils.
Satanists aren`t wild about the Saints either.
And don`t even get me started on the people grossed out by people earning their Red Wings.

Solution to the problem. So that absolutely NO one will be offended:

From now on all Mascots, Cities, States, or any other identifier will be eliminated.

Every teams logo will be a Colored Square, with the ball of their sport centered in an opposing color. Each team is allowed only two colors.

Example: This would be the National & American Baseball leagues logos (are we still allowed to use `National` and `American`?):

See, NO ONE can be offended by that.

What?

Sorry, just got a call from the NAACBP (The National Association for the Advancement of Color-Blind People)....they`re offended.

Well

Let`s take it even more basic: The people who partake in the activity of these sports shouldn`t be called `Players`.

Player - n - A male who is skilled at manipulating ("playing") others, and especially at seducing women by pretending to care about them, when in reality they are only interested in sex.

I find this term offensive, and it must not be used.

Henceforth, all mascots shall be outlawed.

Better yet, shut the whole damn thing down. Eliminate a sporting events That way we wont offend ANYbody.

No, if scientists found the cure for cancer and made it readily available & affordable to the general public, Obama would invalidate their patent and say they had no right to profit from it at all, thus ensuring that no one would ever invest another penny to cure another disease.

"I blame Obama."

Of course you do.

If scientists found the cure for cancer and made it readily available & affordable to the general public you`d blame Obama for doctors and pharmaceutical workers losing their jobs.

Saying things like "a name is just a name" is BS. If people of that visual minority find the term offensive than it should be changed. The name is a derogatory term. Comparing it to the Cleveland Indians isn`t accurate as the term Indian is still used. In Canada we still have the Indian Act from 1919.

Comparing them to the Browns is also inaccurate. It would be accurate if they were named the N@#$%rs and had a logo of a black guy eating watermelon.

This is a VERY bad thing! Using Government Agencies to enforce non-existing "laws" without recourse OR due process is simply Fascism.

The USC `Trojans` offend MY Greek ancestry! Change their name immediately!

Why This Is Scary For All Americans

What`s Next? `Negro` or "Coloured`??

I blame Obama.

They should change their name to the Washington Tyrants.

The Yankee comment is stupid. If anything, they term Yankee would offend a northerner, not a southerner. It was meant to be derogatory but didn`t work and northerners embraced the term.

NJ.com comment concluded:

The New York Giants and the San Francisco Giants promote obesity, a growing childhood epidemic. Again, it is the wrong message to our children. Those names could also be offensive to anyone who is vertically challenged.

The Cincinnati Reds promote downers/barbiturates. Wrong message to our children.

The Milwaukee Brewers---well that goes without saying. Wrong message to our children.

So, there you go. We need to support any legislation that comes out to rectify this travesty, because the government will likely become involved with this issue, as they should. Just the kind of thing the do-nothing senate and congress loves.

Nj.com comment continued:

The New York Yankees offend the Southerners. Do you see a team named for the Confederacy? No! There is no room for any reference to that tragic war that cost this country so many young men`s lives.

I am also offended by the blatant references to the Catholic religion among our sports team names. It is inappropriate to have the New Orleans Saints, the Los Angeles Angels or the San Diego Padres.

Then there are the team names that glorify criminals who raped and pillaged. We are talking about the horrible Oakland Raiders, the Minnesota Vikings, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Pittsburgh Pirates!

Now, let us address those teams that clearly send the wrong message to our children. The San Diego Chargers promote irresponsible fighting or even spending habits. That is the wrong message to our children.

From a comment on NJ.com:

Here are some other politically correct thoughts to consider: I agree with our Native Americans. I am highly insulted by the racially charged name of the Washington Redskins. One might argue that to name a professional football team after Native Americans would exalt them as fine warriors, but nay, nay.

We must be careful not to offend, and in the spirit of political correctness and courtesy, we must move forward. Let`s ditch the Kansas City Chiefs, the Atlanta Braves and the Cleveland Indians. If your shorts are in a wad because of the reference the name Redskins makes to skin color, then we need to get rid of the Cleveland Browns.

The Carolina Panthers obviously were named to keep the memory of militant Blacks from the 60`s alive. Gone! It`s offensive to us white folk.

Not this crap again!

Being offended is just giving somebody power over you. Don`t give them that power.

White man, black man, yellow man, red man. Hey we got a rainbow goin` on here. Let`s all concentrate on the man part and maybe we`ll figure out how stupid concentrating on the color part really is.

Anybody ever heard the term Yankee? Yep, that started as a disparaging term.

Yeah, just searched the Trademark web site. Seems that `Redskins` is `offensive`, yet `Captain Stabbin` is not.

The Owner of the Redskins needs to do one of two things:
1) Change the name to `Washington Lame Ducks`.
2) Dissolve the team and put every single player, employee, hot dog vendor and parking attendent out of work.
