Coincidentally my uncle and me were talking about this the other night at dinner because he`d seen a documentary about one of the first ships to lay a trans-atlantic comms cable.

I`d always wondered how the do it and how they find the cable again to make repairs and stuff like that. This gif doesn`t really answer those questions but it has reminded me to go off and google it properly.

    Thanks, good post.

If anyone has worked in this field can they tell us what those little clusters of colour specks in the cable are? Are they just remnants of the manufacturing process or are they important?

Worked for TYCO who do this sort of stuff, I did the pylon overhead connectors, and underground earthing points, the amount of different sized connectors is mindblowing. There are TYCO Ships which do the underwater cabling,

The blue and yellow flecks I believe are guides
so they know they have fitted the cable the right way round

Haven`t laid real undersea cable. but I built a series of scale models for a project, one of which was very similar to the first GIF. (Strait of Belle Isle, for those who care.)

I made part of the assemblies for mapping the ocean floor. Don`t know if it was for oil or communications.

    Research people......
We`re in the way, and instead Sally hands me a cross-section of the cable which carries the electricity from the substations to the land. It`s a piece of art as well as an elegant piece of engineering. When I admire it, she laughs and says that quite a few people have said they`d like to take it home.
