I`d rather have trashy tabloids than the Daily Mail. Trashy tabloids are money-grubbing, tasteless and depressing, but the Daily Mail is malicious propaganda and genuinely harmful to society. It`s one of the worst things in the UK today.
wow...I thought American tabloids were trashy.
This isn`t a tabloid. Tabloids at least pretend to be newspapers. This is an example of a style of magazine which is filled with a disturbing mixture of fluffy happy stories about pets and babies and horrific stories about foul abuse and murders. They also usually contain one or two stories about attention-grabbing scenarios that are unlikely but possible. For example, one I saw on a table at work had as one of its title stories the tale of a woman who found out her husband was cheating on her and is now in a relationship with his mother. It`s likely that little if anything in these magazines is genuinely true.

There are trashy tabloids in the UK, but they`re nowhere near this level of trashiness. Except for The Sport, but that`s openly intended as a joke and isn`t anywhere near as nasty. The Sport is about soft porn and silly "news" stories (and a bit of sport).

Not forgetting the classics "World war II bomber found on the moon" and "Freddie Starr ate my hamster". I`m sure you can think of lots more.

All newspapers pander to their demographic. However, I often fear to what extent the papers are appeasing their readers, and to what extent the readers are blindly accepting what they`re reading.

My father accepts everything he reads in The Sun as being factual and black and white (to the extent that he believes even the blatant urban myths they`ve printed over the years). I work with several people who go one step further--that of accepting unquestioningly everything reported in The Daily Sport (AND the Sunday edition), particularly the agony pages. It`s often enough to make you want to take an overdose and then immure yourself in the basement.

I hate the Mail because it panders to every insecurities its readers have.. The evil Torygraph is bad but at least pretty factual.. but the Mail is nasty and speculative. Its obsession with pubescent girls is worrying, as is its racism.I know elderly people who believe every word they read in the Mail- their lives are miserable with worry and fear.

@Madduck Ironically the Daily Fail has the best record at the PCC, less complaints upheld then Guardian Telegraph Indy etc. If you want a fairer appraisal of an event, read it in the Guardian and then read it in the Telegraph. Usually you`ll get that extra bit of context from one or the other. They`re all guilty of distorting it to fit their ideals, DM is just more successful at it.

Relax you`d like this T shirt

@madduck: How to edit at IAB:
1 - copy error-filled post (left click & drag)
2 - paste in Reply box
3 - fix errors, replace [ ] commands, also links
4 - :-) smileys too! They vanish when copied, lolz!
5 - reply and then delete the post with mistakes.

I do this a LOT! Unless there`s a bunch of links or stuff...
Anyhow, most IAB readers forgive typos :-) most of us...

I am sure some stories have a base in truth- as this obviously did. However- to say they are distorted is an understatement. As for the DM- at least the damn Onion is a spoof- sadly the Fail is not. Now I need to take blood pressure stuff...

British tabloids are as bad or worse than American ones.

Don`t let a cheap tabloid besmirch the quiet dignity of decent, hardworking folk.

I remember that one of the stories was, and I quote (to the best of my memory`s ability): `A chimpanzee ate my face![!!!!!!111]`.

It wasn`t as entertaining as I thought it would be. It just had me wonder what kind of a magazine would make such a horrible story a sensation. Then it got worse when I started wondering what kind of a person would sell such a story to such a magazine ...

@Madduck, this is like when you say Daily Mail is equivalent to the Onion. It`s not it`s stupid it`s heavily biased and puts things out of context(just a lot more than Guardian, Telegrah indy etc)

The girl is Tressa Middleton her brother sexuall abused her she got pregnant. A situation of sexual abuse which is not unique to the UK. Just unfortunately she got pregnant. Girl was adopted. And from what I remember she spiralled into drug abuse and drink, but then worked her way out and is now a normal functioning member of society. Despite the abuse she suffered.

Though these magazines do have absolutely no taste or shame. But society is more the fool for buying this crap.

I am not entirety sure these shenanigans actually happen anywhere. This is one of a range of magazines sold in supermarketes aimed and the borderline literate. They are like The Jeremy Kyle show with slut shaming and body policing added for some reason. I always hope if I ignore them they will go away...
