There`s an attraction at the Alton Towers theme park based on this legend :)
It`s called "Hex"
Here`s the video:

Maybe He just didn`t want this tree to get away like the last one.

"I`m no chain expert but that chain can`t be any older then 80 years." I happen to be something of one, and that chain looks machined. The links are also very consistent (albeit stretched by strain and age). Also: chain made just last year could look this way if it isn`t properly looked after.

@ Finngorby: Well, I`m glad you opened an account, for whatever reason. Stick around, have fun, and interact with the squirrels and other fauna.

@ Sleepyhallow: It`s gone. Thanks for pointing it out. Kitteh`s actually pretty vigilant about spam. She puts the spammers` ISP numbers in a table and blocks them by those, which takes it a step further than usernames.

"May Of"? Opened an account for the sole purpose of feeding my inner grammar-nazi. Will someone please "Wreck Havoc" upon the idiot who posted this and tatoo "May Have" upon his/her forehead?

@gerry im thinking something among the same lines. i think they had a poltergeist on their land and it brought the tree to life just like in that one movie, whats it called? its on the tip of my tongue. christopher the christmas tree! anyways, the tree started gobbling up children and what not just causing a general ruckus, so they chained him up. the evil spirit still lies dormant within the tree.

Interesting photos and story.

The campus of my undergraduate college included a number of former private estates along the Hudson River and many of the old, large trees had chains in them like this. So I`m guessing the practice wasn`t all that unusual in the 19th century, particularly if the tree was deemed an important part of the landscape.
